Georgetown, Afghanistan’s cricket team showcased an exceptional performance against Uganda in the T20 World Cup match held in Guyana, securing a 125-run victory fueled by a record opening stand and a remarkable five-wicket haul by Fazalhaq Farooqi.
According to International Cricket Council, the match was highlighted by Afghanistan’s opening batsmen Rahmanullah Gurbaz and Ibrahim Zadran, who put together a second-highest ever World Cup opening stand of 154 runs. This significant partnership set a solid foundation for Afghanistan’s impressive total. Fazalhaq Farooqi’s bowling was pivotal in Afghanistan’s defense, capturing five wickets for just nine runs, marking the fourth-best bowling figures in the history of the Men’s T20 World Cup.
The game began with Uganda’s captain Brian Masaba winning the toss and opting to field, aiming to limit Afghanistan to a manageable score. However, disciplined batting from Afghanistan and a lack of control from the Ugandan bowlers saw the score escalate quickly. Gurbaz’s aggressive half-century, which included six boundaries and two sixes, propelled Afghanistan past critical early overs.
Despite a brief fightback from Uganda in the middle overs, where Alpesh Ramjani and Masaba managed to snag a few quick wickets, Afghanistan’s early momentum carried them through to a commanding total. The Ugandan team struggled to keep pace with the run rate, ultimately crumbling under the pressure of Afghanistan’s sharp bowling attack.
The match concluded with accolades for Farooqi, who was named Player of the Match for his electrifying performance, significantly shaping the outcome of the game. Afghanistan’s victory not only highlighted their growing prowess in the international cricket arena but also underscored their capability to execute under pressure.
