Karachi, Speakers at an awareness session emphasized the importance of the Global Framework Agreement (GFA) in upholding fundamental human and trade union rights. They discussed the GFA’s role in implementing international standards for health, safety, living wages, and improving environmental and employment conditions. The event was jointly organized by the Home Based Women Workers Federation (HBWWF) and the National Trade Union Federation (NTUF).
According to Home-Based Women Workers Federation, the session featured insights from Victor Garrido Sotomayor, Global Co-chair of Textile, Apparel, Leather, and Footwear sectors for IndustriALL Global Union. Sotomayor, who is visiting various factories and meeting workers, highlighted the GFA’s comprehensive coverage of worker rights and its alignment with international labor standards. The discussion also touched on the evolution of the GFA from 2000 to 2023, its strategic goals, and the framing of relationships with international bodies like IndustriALL Global Union within Inditex’s global sustainability initiatives.
The speakers outlined the GFA’s utility as a tool for fostering robust industrial relations between multinational organizations such as Inditex and IndustriALL Global Union and their respective suppliers and local affiliates. Through negotiation and dialogue, the GFA aims to ensure respect for human rights and labor standards, emphasizing the importance of freedom of association and collective bargaining. The session also addressed specific challenges and opportunities in Pakistan, advocating for open communication and trust-building between local affiliates and Inditex representatives to effectively implement the GFA.
The purpose of the GFA, as detailed by the speakers, is to strengthen human rights within the supply chain, promote cooperation, and place the worker at the center of all initiatives, thereby enhancing mutual interests and industrial relationships.
