Government College University, Lahore, Appoints First Female Head in 160-Year History

Lahore, Government College University (GCU) Lahore has appointed Prof. Dr. Shazia Bashir as its acting Vice Chancellor, marking the first time in the university’s 160-year history that a woman has held the position. Prof. Bashir, who has been with GCU since 1996 and currently serves as the Dean of the Faculty of Mathematical and Physical Sciences, will occupy the post for four months or until a permanent Vice Chancellor is appointed.

According to Government College University, the appointment was made by the Punjab governor, who conferred upon Prof. Bashir the additional charge of Vice Chancellor. Prof. Bashir is an alumna of GCU, having completed her Master’s degree in Physics at the institution. She furthered her studies with an MPhil from the University of Engineering and Technology, Lahore, and a PhD from the Technical University in Vienna, Austria.

Prof. Bashir has a noteworthy academic and research career, including roles as Director of the Centre for Advanced Studies in Physics and Institute of Physics and as Chairperson of the Department of Physics. She has contributed extensively to research and development in the field, with more than 150 publications in reputed international journals.

The faculty, staff, and students of GCU have expressed their support for Prof. Bashir’s historic appointment, celebrating it as a significant step forward for the university.
