Lahore, In a recent development that has stirred the cricketing world, Hawk-Eye Technologies admitted to a critical error in the Decision Review System (DRS) during a Pakistan Super League match between Quetta Gladiators and Islamabad United at the Gaddafi Stadium. The incident, which involved a decision against Rilee Rossouw of the Quetta Gladiators, has prompted discussions on the reliability of technology in cricket.
According to Pakistan Cricket Board, Hawk-Eye acknowledged a human mistake led to the wrong ball tracking data being broadcasted during the game. The correct data, which was initially tracked accurately by the system, showed the impact as umpire’s call and indicated the ball would have hit the wickets. However, an operator error resulted in incorrect information being displayed, leading to a faulty decision.
Hawk-Eye, the International Cricket Council’s only approved provider for the complete DRS package, including ball tracking and Ultra Edge, expressed regret over the incident. The company highlighted that the correct ball tracking data should have been available shortly after the mistake, had standard processes been followed.
This incident raises concerns about the reliability of technological aids in cricket, despite their widespread acceptance and use since the DRS’s trial in 2008. Hawk-Eye’s admission and apology point towards a need for increased scrutiny and perhaps enhancements in the operational aspects of cricket’s technology tools to prevent such errors in the future.
