Aafia Movement Calls for Justice for Dr. Aafia Siddiqui as a Human Rights Victory

Karachi, On the occasion of the 75th International Human Rights Day, Muhammad Ayub, spokesperson for the Aafia Movement, highlighted the plight of Dr. Aafia Siddiqui, currently incarcerated in the U.S., as a critical human rights issue. He stressed that justice for Siddiqui, who he claims is innocent and subjected to inhumane treatment, would symbolize a victory for human rights.

According to Aafia Movement, Ayub emphasized that human rights are fundamental and should be upheld regardless of a person’s color, race, religion, sex, language, or political affiliation. He asserted that Dr. Aafia Siddiqui, often referred to as the nation’s daughter, has been unjustly imprisoned at FMC Carswell without committing any crime, suffering severe violations of her basic human rights.

Ayub criticized the U.S. legal system for Siddiqui’s 86-year sentence, a decision handed down by Judge Richard Berman, which he claims has been universally rejected by legal experts worldwide. He questioned the fairness of her trial and the alleged mistreatment Siddiqui has endured in prison, including torture and sexual abuse, while being denied communication with her children and family.

Highlighting the broader context, Ayub referenced Clive Stafford Smith, Siddiqui’s lawyer, who recently revealed that out of 10,250 women in U.S. jails, Siddiqui is in the worst condition. The Aafia Movement spokesperson also pointed out that the United Nations acknowledges a rise in human rights violations in recent years. He argued that the human rights situation could only improve if these rights are respected at the governmental level, indicating that Siddiqui’s case involves injustices by more than one state.
