Lahore, Governor Punjab and Chancellor of Punjab University, Muhammad Balighur Rehman, emphasized the significance of the youth’s role in driving Pakistan toward a knowledge-based economy. Addressing the Prime Minister Laptops Distribution Ceremony Phase-III at Al Raazi Hall, he underscored the importance of investing in the younger generation and harnessing the digital realm for the nation’s progress. The event also witnessed discussions on the merits of the laptop distribution initiative and the broader landscape of education and technology in Pakistan.
Rehman articulated the necessity to impart relevant skills to the youth, enabling them to elevate the country’s name both domestically and internationally. He addressed the widening digital divide and highlighted the rapid growth of Pakistan’s software exports, particularly in gaming. Mentioning the country’s significant strides in e-lancing, Rehman also dispelled misconceptions about the political motivations behind the laptop scheme, emphasizing its history of merit-based distribution.
The Governor enumerated challenges faced by the nation, referencing the halt of the laptop scheme from 2018 to 2022 and the country’s near economic default. However, he praised the efforts of Shahbaz Sharif in sustaining such initiatives amidst economic turmoil. Rehman touched upon educational milestones, including the incorporation of Quran teachings in Islamabad’s schools and the formulation of the National Curriculum Council.
In a critique of the 2018-2022 period, Rehman mentioned an uptick in out-of-school children and drew attention to the rise in the higher education budget during the PML-N tenure. He also commented on Transparency International’s rankings as a barometer for gauging governance.
Dr. Khalid Mehmood, the PU Vice Chancellor, elaborated on the university’s adherence to merit and highlighted the surge in admissions this year. He also mentioned the distribution of laptops as a crucial boost for academic research.
Dr. Kamran Abid shed light on the pivotal role laptops play in nurturing a digital knowledge-based economy. With the support of various institutions, a range of computer programs are being initiated. He also mentioned the provision of free internet for students on campus and the university’s digital transformation in administrative matters.
