Stunting can be reduced by consuming milk: Vice-Chancellor

Lahore, June 01, 2023 (PPI-OT): University of Veterinary and Animal Sciences Lahore Vice-Chancellor Prof Dr Nasim Ahmad has said that stunting in children is a big challenge and a major problem which can be reduced by consuming pure and safe milk. The Vice-Chancellor was addressing a seminar arranged by the UVAS’s Department of Dairy Technology to observe the World Milk Day here Thursday. Various activities including a walk, a seminar, a question-answer session on safe milk, milk drinking and milk-made food items competitions featured the day to create awareness about the importance of milk, its nutritional value and various milk products.

The Vice-Chancellor first led the walk and then chaired the seminar while Dean Faculty of Animal Production and Technology Prof Dr Prof Dr Saima, Dean Biosciences Prof Dr Habibur Rehman, Chairperson Department of Parasitology Prof Dr Kamran Ashraf, Chairperson Department of Dairy Technology Dr Saima Inayat, Dr Muhammad Junaid and dairy technology students, faculty members and Punjab Food Authority and Livestock Department officials, representatives from public and private industry and farmers were present.

The Vice-Chancellor spoke about the importance of milk and various problems related to safety and quality of milk. He said that research suggests milk consumption can reduce the problem of stunting in children. He said that milk pricing is also an issue, which can be solved by decamping it. He said that there are challenges but there also opportunities in dairy sector and we should exploit the opportunities. He lauded the efforts of UVAS Dairy Technology Department for conducting various dairy professionals’ capacity building trainings. The Vice-Chancellor also visited a stall displaying various food items made from milk by dairy technology students. He distributed shields among the guests, organisers and contest winning students.

Earlier, Dairy Technologist from Punjab Food Authority Naveed Ahmed talked about provision of safe milk, Chashni-Yum Group Quality Head Mubeen Arshad Awan spoke about influence of raw milk quality on processed dairy milk, Cattle Owner Welfare Association Punjab President Ilyas Gujjar and Farmers Cheese Making CEO Imran Saleh described their success stories while Chairperson Dairy Technology Department Dr Saima Inayat presented the vote of thanks.

Families and New Technologies: Insights from International Day of Families

Lahore, June 01, 2023 (PPI-OT): The Office of Human Resources (HR), in collaboration with Day-care, organised an interactive awareness session to celebrate International Day of Families on Friday May 19, 2023. The session, led by Ms. Iram Qazi, an experienced education professional, aimed to highlight the significant impact of technology on families under the theme ‘Family and New Technologies’ for 2023. The audience included LUMS employees, their spouses, children, as well as day-care parents and children.

The session commenced with an in-depth discussion on the definition of family, emphasising the importance of individuals living together and sharing their entire lives. Mrs. Qazi warmly reminisced about the past, emphasising the vital role various activities played in quality family time. She actively engaged the children, encouraging them to share their diverse knowledge of games from earlier times.

The session also explored the acceleration of technology and the rapid transition from older technologies to advanced new ones. The speaker discussed how entertainment has evolved drastically over time, highlighting the widespread accessibility of everything through smartphones. Furthermore, Mrs. Qazi addressed the negative effects of technology on children (including infants) and parents, resulting from excessive cell phone usage. To tackle these concerns, she emphasised the importance of establishing boundaries such as limiting screen time, implementing parental controls, and encouraging alternative physical activities for children.

Following the informative session, the audience was divided into five groups for an interactive activity. This activity aimed to engage participants and foster discussions on the immense impact of technology on human lives. Each group was given different stances to prepare and present their charts, engage in debates, and have dialogues, ensuring the equal participation of parents and children to pique their interest. As a closing remark, the speaker shared a real-life case study, providing concrete examples of the effects of technology on individuals and families. Mr. Faisal Kheiri, Director, HR, expressed his gratitude and appreciation to Mrs. Qazi for her valuable insights in raising awareness about the tremendous impact of technology on families.

Faculty SOAD participated in PIFD National Conference in Lahore

Faisalabad, June 01, 2023 (PPI-OT): Ms. Aroobah Mumtaz and Ms. Maham Nadeem participated in National Conference Lahore at PIFD on 16,17 May 2023. The presented research work was based on upcycling of textile waste and sustainable textile product development. A case study of waste from the Faisalabad market was explained with product development references. Prototypes of Textile surfaces were also displayed at the conference which were much appreciated by the guest at the venue.
