Dubai, January 18, 2023 (PPI-OT):The ICC’s 100% Cricket movement has been amplified by it’s first-ever ICC 100% Cricket Mentorship Programme during the inaugural, ICC Under19 Women’s T20 World Cup in South Africa.

The programme aims to provide support to the youngsters in their development during the tournament with learning opportunities around Health education, with a focus on menstruation and its effect on performance, media training and overall support during training sessions, team meetings, planning sessions until the conclusion of the group stage tournament matches.

Following on from the success of the launch of the 100% Cricket campaign in 2020, with the subsequent inclusions of properties such as the 100% Cricket webinar series, 100% Cricket Super Stars, the 100% Cricket Podcast, the 100% Cricket Future Leaders Programme, 100% Cricket Coach and Umpire Workshops and the 100% Cricket themed ICC Annual Conference, the ICC has taken its commitment to raising the profile of women’s cricket one step further with the 100% Cricket Mentorship Programme.

A mentor has been assigned to all 16 participating teams with the intention to support, encourage and inspire the future stars as they make their transition onto the global stage and become heroes.

The mentors are assisting in giving players a world-class experience both on and off the field in their first-ever World Cup, sharing their own experiences as young cricketers and giving insight on how to navigate big tournaments and their blossoming careers going forward.

The mentors are as follows:

Mignon du Preez – South Africa and United Arab Emirates (UAE)

Trisha Chetty – India and Sri Lanka

Abtaha Maqsood – Scotland and Bangladesh

Sunette Viljoen – Australia and United States of America (USA)

Frankie Mackay – New Zealand and Indonesia

Lydia Greenway – England and Ireland

Anisa Mohammed – West Indies and Rwanda

Sana Mir – Pakistan and Zimbabwe

ICC Women’s Cricket Manager, Snehal Pradhan, said: “As part of our approach to support Member countries, and participating teams at this tournament the ICC has actioned the 100% Cricket Mentorship Programme.

“With so many players participating for the first time in a global event and a few teams making their debut onto the global stage, we wanted to provide the opportunity for them to rely on not just the support of this event, but a big sister attached to their team.

“That allows the players to rely on the experience of athletes who have walked a mile in their shoes and know what goes into doing well at a global tournament, handling the pressure but also enjoying yourself.

“It is a special project for everyone at the ICC who has been involved as it is the first of its kind. With so many role models emerging out of women’s cricket, there is an opportunity for them to give back to the next generation and the opportunity for the ICC to support the future stars of women’s cricket is truly amazing.”

Former Pakistan Captain and Mentor, Sana Mir, said: “The Mentorship Programme provides a unique opportunity to the next generation of cricketers to have their role models by their side to support, guide, and assist to get the best out of them.

“It is still very fresh in my mind when we were discussing at ICC Women’s Committee about the importance of having mentors during our journeys.

“To have an U19 Women’s World Cup and providing additional support with mentors shows the ICC’s commitment to expand the women’s game. It gives me immense pleasure to be a mentor to Pakistan and Zimbabwe and I’m enjoying watching the players bloom before our very eyes.”

England’s Lydia Greenway also shared her excitement in her involvement with the programme. She said:

“This is a hugely exciting steppingstone in the players’ journey.

“We want to ensure they finish the tournament with brilliant memories and experiences, with the motivation to take the game forward.

“It’s been an exciting time with the players and observing their growth with the passing of every match in the tournament has been really gratifying.”

From Scotland, mentor, Abtaha Maqsood said; “The 100% Cricket Mentorship Programme is an exciting innovation and the players coming through this tournament are incredibly lucky to have female role models that they can look up to.

“When I was younger, I struggled to find female role models within the game due to the lack of visibility in women’s cricket, but an initiative like 100% Cricket Mentorship Programme helps change this. I’m honoured to be given the opportunity to mentor Scotland and Bangladesh, we’ve had the most fun so far and there’s been a lot of learning and growing from the players’ point of view. They have been hungry to soak up what has been shared and it’s been an incredible experience so far.”

USA head coach, legendary former West Indian batter and ICC Hall of Fame Inductee, Shivnarine Chanderpaul said of his team’s mentor:

“The ICC Mentor, Sunette Viljoen, assigned to our team has been fantastic and an inspiration to the girls. Her wealth of experience as an international cricketer and Olympic athlete has connected her with the USA players. She’s an inspiration on and off the field, from her daily inspirational quotes shared in the team’s chat group to her actually being present at our training sessions has been value added.

“Many of the girls no doubt see a pathway possible to a professional cricket career, similar to Sunette, we have an Olympic hopeful in our team, who no doubt was impacted by Sunette’s presence.

“With regard to the other aspects of the ICC’s 100% Cricket Mentorship Programme initiated this year, all of the workshop sessions have been very informative and an added dimension to the development of the total cricketer.”

India charge into Super Six with emphatic win over Scotland

Dubai, January 18, 2023 (PPI-OT):India confirmed their spot at the top of Group D, as they overpowered Scotland by 85 runs, in their final group fixture of the ICC Under19 Women’s T20 World Cup in Benoni on Wednesday afternoon.

India signalled their intent by choosing to bat when they won the toss, and even the loss of captain, Shafali Verma and Sonia Mehdiya relatively early, didn’t derail their plans. G Trisha’s sparkling 57 off 51 balls was studded with six boundaries. She received good support from the reliable Richa Ghosh, as they added 70 for the third wicket.

Ghosh’s experience weighed in with 33 from 35 balls, including three boundaries. The pair fell within three balls of each other, and it was left to Shweta Sehrawat to provide the fireworks to close out the innings. She hammered 31 not out from just 10 balls. The blitz included four fours and two maximums, powering India to 151 for four.

Katherine Fraser was the pick of the bowlers for Scotland, with two for 31.

Chasing 152 to win, Scotland started with Ailsa Lister (14 off 14 balls) and Darcey Carter (24 off 22 balls) adding 24 in the first four overs. Once they departed however, the wheels fell off for a Scottish side that has been on a steep learning curve in the past fortnight.

Mannat Kashyap tore through the middle-order, snaring four for just 12 runs in her spell of four overs. Archana was just as destructive, with three for 14 in her allotted overs.

Such was their devastation, Scotland were bundled out for 66, losing their last six wickets for just 16 runs. Sonam Yadav applied the finishing touches with the ball, picking up two wickets in her seven deliveries.

India now move onto the Super Six stage, where they will be rightly acknowledged as one of the genuine contenders for the maiden U19 Women’s T20 World Cup.

For Scotland, this marks the end of the road, but there were plenty of lessons taken on board, which several players will take into the senior women’s side going forward.

Scores in brief:

Toss: India, who elected to bat first.

India 151 for four in 20 overs (G Trisha 57, Richa Ghosh 33, Shweta Sehrawat 31 not out, Katherine Fraser two for 31)

Scotland 66 all out in 13. 1 overs (Darcey Carter 24, Ailsa Lister 14, Mannat Kashyap four for 12, Archana three for 14, Sonam Yadav two for 1)

India won by 85 runs.

South Africa book Super Six place with gritty win over UAE

Dubai, January 18, 2023 (PPI-OT):South Africa held their nerve in defending a low score for the second match in a row in their 45-run victory over the United Arab Emirates (UAE) in their ICC Under19 Women’s T20 World Cup clash in Benoni.

The victory, which had eerily similar statistics to their last match against Scotland, was taken away from the UAE thanks to the remarkable figures of 4/11 off four overs by off-break bowler Miane Smit, securing the hosts’ qualification for the Super Six League stage in second place, in Group D.

Batting first for the third, successive match after the UAE won the toss and decided to bowl, wasn’t the only case of Deja vu for South Africa, they also scored 112/7 in their 20 overs – the same score from their innings against Scotland.

While the South Africans could have taken that to be a good omen because they went on to win their match against the Scots by 44 runs, it also meant their innings stuttered and was in desperate need of the three contributions of 20 plus runs by openers Elandri Janse van Rensburg and Simone Lourens, as well as skipper Oluhle Siyo lower down the order.

After enduring a first over maiden by the UAE’s lanky left-arm pace bowler Mahika Gaur, Lourens and Janse Van Rensburg put on 33 for their opening stand. The former went on to top-score with a 29-ball 27 (three fours) while the latter had already put in a big-hitting 24 (23 balls, five fours) by the time she was dismissed.

South Africa’s ploy of holding captain, Siyo, back instead of letting her bat at first drop, paid dividends as she contributed a useful 25 not out (28 balls, one boundary) coming in seventh and providing the sting in the tail with lower order batters like Jenna Evans (17).

While they had given themselves something to bowl at by the end of the innings, it was inescapable that, for the second match in a row, they had left themselves a lot of work to do in the field.

Thankfully, the bowlers were up for the fight again, building pressure with accurate bowling and taking wickets regularly to not give the UAE a sniff.

The opening pair of off-spinner Jemma Botha (1/11 off four overs) and pace bowler Ayanda Hlubi – who took 2/6 off her first two overs, with both scalps coming from successive deliveries – put the brakes on the run-rate and also took wickets.

Kayler Reyneke (1/22), leg-spinner Seshnie Naidu (2/16) and Smit didn’t let up either when they came on, the latter administering the knockout blow through a double strike in her first over and accounting for four of the last six UAE wickets to fall.

Scores in brief:

Toss: UAE, who elected to bowl.

South Africa 112 for 7 in 20 overs (Simone Lourens 27, Oluhle Siyo 25, Lavanya Keny two for 10, Vaishnave Mahesh two for 22)

UAE 67 all out in 17 overs (Samaira Dharnidharka 13, Lavanya Keny 11, Miane Smit four for 11, Ayanda Hlubi two for six)

South Africa won by 45 runs.
