Australia retain second place Group 1 log position after triumph over UAE

Dubai, January 23, 2023 (PPI-OT):A convincing, six-wicket victory over the United Arab Emirates (UAE) saw Australia hang on to their spot in the top two of the Super Six log in the ICC Under-19 Women’s T20 World Cup.

Their match at the JB Marks Oval in Potchefstroom offered them a chance to draw level with India on six points, an opportunity they took with both hands by putting the opposition in and making reasonably light work of the chase.

Australia’s net run-rate sees them just behind India in the Group 1 standings, and in a strong position to qualify for the semi-finals. Bangladesh would have to beat the UAE strongly to usurp them in the scramble for the final four.

The UAE made 107/8 in their innings, which Australia overhauled on the first ball of the 16th over. Openers Kate Pelle (51 off 36 balls, eight fours) and Sianna Ginger (14) broke the back of the chase with an opening stand of 66.

By the time the UAE bowlers – led by off-spinner Lavanya Keny’s 2/23 in four overs – started pegging them back, the job was already done.

The UAE seemed well on their way to making a good fist of things and setting Australia a competitive total, despite losing the wicket of opener Keny with just eight runs on the board.

This was thanks to opener and wicketkeeper Theertha Satish, who held the best parts of the innings together with a gutsy, captains’ knock of 58 (eight fours). Satish batted until the first ball of the 16th over, when she was the fourth wicket to fall after her 48-ball innings.

The moment she was caught off leg-spinner Amy Smith’s bowling the UAE had very little by way of batters who could take them to a total they could bowl at, only managing 107 for eight as Australia’s bowlers shared the wickets evenly amongst themselves.

Fast bowler Maggie Clark, who began the rot by dismissing opener Keny, caught and bowled for five, was the pick of them with figures of 3/20, with Lucy Hamilton taking two for 10 off her three overs and Smith chipping in with two more wickets for 14 runs.

Scores in brief:

Toss: Australia, who elected to bowl.

UAE 107 for 8 in 20 overs (Theertha Satish 58, Samaira Dharnidharka 17, Maggie Clark three for 20, Lucy Hamilton two for 10)

Australia 109 for 4 in 15.1 overs (Kate Pelle 51, Claire Moore 16, Lavanya Keny two for 23, Vaishnave Mahesh one for 22)

Australia won by six wickets with 29 balls to spare.

Demerit point given to Rawalpindi pitch for England Test rescinded

Dubai, January 23, 2023 (PPI-OT):Following an appeal by the Pakistan Cricket Board pursuant to the ICC Pitch and Outfield Monitoring Process, the demerit point handed to the Rawalpindi Cricket Stadium for a “below average” pitch rating for the first match of the ICC World Test Championship series between Pakistan and England from 1 to 5 December last year has been rescinded.

Having reviewed footage of the Test Match, the ICC appeal panel, consisting of the ICC General Manager – Cricket and Chair of the ICC Men’s Cricket Committee, were unanimous in their opinion that, while the guidelines had been followed by the Match Referee in accordance with Appendix A of the Pitch Monitoring Process, there were several redeeming features – including the fact that a result was achieved following a compelling game, with 37 out of a possible 39 wickets being taken. As such, the appeal panel concluded that the wicket did not warrant the “below average” rating.

Oxford University establishes evidence that vaccination helps reduce complications for pregnant women suffering from COVID-19 Omicron variant

Karachi, January 23, 2023 (PPI-OT):In its latest ‘2022 INTERCOVID Study’ conducted in 41 hospitals across 18 countries, including the Aga Khan University Hospital in Pakistan, the global network led by the Oxford Maternal and Perinatal Health Institute (OMPHI) at the University of Oxford has cited that pregnant women who were vaccinated, were well protected against severe COVID-19 symptoms and complications and had a very low risk of admission to an intensive care unit.

The study evaluated the impact of the COVID-19 Omicron variant on maternal and neonatal outcomes and the efficacy of vaccination to reduce the associated risks. The researchers studied 1,545 pregnant women diagnosed with the variant and 3,073 non-diagnosed, concomitant pregnant women as controls. The in-depth research found out that although Omicron variant is associated with several severe risks for pregnant women, adequate vaccination dosage can limit its risks. In the study, the mRNA vaccines were most effective in preventing severe COVID-19 symptoms and complications, although viral vector vaccines with a booster also provided adequate protection.

The Aga Khan University’s faculty Dr. Shabina Ariff and Professor Zulfiqar Bhutta are co-authors of the Lancet paper that contributed to the evidence with 243 local pregnant women from Pakistan and establish concrete evidence of vaccine effectiveness globally.

Highlighting the importance of vaccination coverage among pregnant women, Professor Jose Villar, Professor of Perinatal Medicine at the University of Oxford, who co-led INTERCOVID 2022, said “We have provided robust, evidence-based information on the increased risk of the COVID-19 Omicron variant during pregnancy for severe maternal complications among symptomatic and unvaccinated women. Of concern is that severe symptoms of the disease occurred in 4% to 7% of unvaccinated women diagnosed with the COVID-19 Omicron variant during pregnancy. The study clearly indicates the need for a complete vaccination course during pregnancy, preferably with a booster, to provide protection for at least 10 months after the last dose. Antenatal services worldwide should strive to include vaccination against COVID-19 in the routine care of pregnant women.”

The study has concluded that prevention of severe COVID-19 symptoms and complications requires women to be completely vaccinated, preferably with a booster dose as well.
