Rehana Panjwani becomes the first and only Pakistani and south Asian to receive SIOP nursing leadership award 

Karachi, October 22, 2021 (PPI-OT):Rehana Panjwani, a manager at the Indus Hospital Research Centre, has become the first Pakistani nurse to receive the prestigious Société Internationale d’Oncologie Pédiatrique/International Society of Paediatric Oncology (SIOP) Nursing Leadership Award for her services in the field of Pediatric Oncology Nursing.

A highly accomplished professional, Rehana has been associated with the field for over 20 years, with more than 16 years of expertise in nursing in Pediatric Oncology. She is now the first and the only Pakistani and South Asian nurse to receive this award. Only three other nurses have received the award previously, two from the United Kingdom and one from the United States of America.

“Pediatric Oncology Nursing is my passion. Advocacy, teaching, and empowering nurses in Low Middle Income Countries (LMIC) is and will remain my goals,” says Rehana, who served as Manager of the Nursing Pediatric Complex at The Indus Hospital, Korangi Campus in Karachi.

Rehana is the founder of the first Pediatric Oncology Nursing Department in Pakistan. Since its inception in 2009, it has trained more than 350 nurses from all over the country, including 15 international nurses from Asia and Africa.

Her accomplishments include working on the Baseline Standards Task Force, which highlights the importance of achieving safe practice standards for Pediatric Oncology Nurses in LMICs. As a member of the SIOP Nursing committee and a nurse specialist for the WHO Global Initiative for Childhood Cancer, Rehana has continued to amplify the voice and priorities of Pediatric Oncology Nurses.

Additionally, she has designed the Pediatric Oncology Nursing Education course at The Indus Hospital, Korangi Campus, which provides opportunities for many nurses in LMICs to obtain specialty knowledge and training not otherwise available.

About the International Society of Pediatric Oncology

SIOP was formed on November 6, 1969. The organization is the only global multidisciplinary society devoted to Pediatric and Adolescent Cancer. The society has over 1,800 members worldwide, including doctors, nurses, other healthcare professionals, scientists and researchers.

The SIOP Nursing Leadership Award is an initiative of the International Society of Pediatric Oncology that pays tribute to Pediatric Oncology nurses and adolescent cancer workers every year who serve the people.

Directorate of student’s affairs holds orientation sessions for new students at female campus 

Islamabad, October 22, 2021 (PPI-OT):Directorate of Students’ Affairs Office, Female Campus, and International Islamic University Islamabad (IIUI) organized orientation sessions for the newly enrolled students of Ph.D., MS. MA, and BS programs for the semester Fall-2021 in the auditorium, Fatima Block, Female Campus.

Dr. Sumayya Chughtai, Students’ Advisor, Female Campus welcomed the new students and presented a comprehensive overview of the female campus, and briefed the students about the norms, values, and prospects of study in IIUI. She also briefed students about university services policies, procedures and students’ responsibilities.

Dr. Sidra ul Hassan, focal person Students’ Advisor Office gave a comprehensive presentation regarding the fee section, admission process, medical center, library, and sports office for the guidance of new students. On this occasion all departments strictly followed SOPs as a preventive measure from the COVID-19 pandemic.

Students Advisor thanked all the team for provision of technical and allied coordination to conduct the programs successfully.

She said that purpose of this activity was to welcome newly enrolled students in different faculties and provide them comprehensive information regarding students’ code of conduct, rules, and regulations of IIUI.

Virtual University’s Board of Governors Meeting

IIUI female campus marks teachers’ day 

Islamabad, October 22, 2021 (PPI-OT):Directorate of Students’ Affair in Collaboration with Department of Education, Female Campus, and International Islamic University Islamabad (IIUI) celebrated “International Teachers` Day”.

In this regard a cake cutting ceremony was held here in female campus to pay tribute to the teachers.

Prof. Dr. Farkhanda Zia, Vice President, Female Campus, IIUI graced the occasion as chief guest, while Dr. Sumayya Chughtai Students’ Advisor inaugurated stalls which were decorated by students. Tge stalls contained teachers’ day cards, flowers, batches, and posters to acknowledge teachers on this occasion.

On this occasion, chairpersons of departments, faculty members and a large number of students participated in the celebrations to mark the day at the female campus of the university.

Prof. Dr. Farkhanda Zia, in her address, congratulated the students and faculty members for holding the successful event to celebrate the day. Vice President urged that teachers’ services should be highly acknowledged by the society and students must cooperate with teachers to build a strong and prosperous nation.

Dr. Najeeba Arif, Dean, Faculty of Languages and Literature (FLL), IIUI in her address said that teachers are spiritual parents of students who upraise their pupils from ground to sky and inculcate the traditions, customs, values, arts and moralities. She added that the day must highlight the fact that teachers must be empowered as a critical step towards quality education and sustainable societies.

Faculty members also paid rich tributes to the teachers’ contribution and services. They also expressed that teachers have a huge responsibility for building a nation and no nation can achieve its goals without the role of teachers. The Chairpersons, faculty members, and students attended the event carrying placards in recognition of the services of teachers.

Dr. Shazia, chairperson Education Department, Faculty of Social Sciences, IIUI said the teachers play a pivotal role in imparting quality education and they are the main source of inspiration for their students.

Dr. Sumayya, Students Advisor Female Campus also highlighted the important role of teachers in the life of students. She appreciated efforts done by the students to celebrate International Teacher’s Day and making the teachers feels special by showing their respect and love towards their teachers.

Department of anthropology commemorates world osteoporosis day at FC

Islamabad, October 22, 2021 (PPI-OT):World Osteoporosis Day was commemorated at International Islamic University on October 21, 2021. In this regard Department of Anthropology (female campus) organized a seminar on “Osteoporosis: An Orientation and Solution”.

This program was organized in collaboration with Office of the Student Affairs. A poster competition to sensitize the students and academic community on osteoporosis was also held for students before this seminar in which students from almost all the departments and faculties enthusiastically participated in it.

Madam Shagufta Umer from Dawah Academy chaired the session. The students and faculty members termed this session as an informative and wisdom-oriented session on osteoporosis. Dr Noreen Sahar who spoke on causes and solutions of osteoporosis also conducted question-answer on the occasion.

She said that purpose of this event was to create awareness about a prevailing but overlooked critical issue of weakness of bones and micro architectural deterioration especially among women. She added that Anthropology as a discipline has a unique feature to align natural and social phenomena of human life in order to present more dynamic solution to human problems.

The speakers opined that is a global issue though gets critical in Pakistan due to malnutrition, unavailability of pure food items, and unawareness; consistently osteoporosis starts at an earlier age in Pakistan.

They said that a proactive, active and healthy life style was a solution to keep the bones healthy and stature un-deteriorated. At the end, the certificates were given to the position holders of poster competitions and the organizers.
