Karachi, Dow University of Health Sciences (DUHS) observed World Oral Health Day with an event emphasizing the critical connection between oral health and overall well-being. Pro-Vice Chancellor Professor Jahan Ara, during the event held at the Abdul Qadeer Khan Auditorium on the Ojha Campus, highlighted that symptoms of many diseases first manifest in the mouth, underscoring the importance of oral health care. The event also featured the announcement and prize distribution for winners of a 60-second reel competition aimed at raising oral health awareness among students.
According to Dow University of Health Sciences, the event saw participation from DUHS Registrar Dr. Ashar Afaq, Dean of Dentistry Dr. Imtiaz Ahmed, Professor Asma Faisal, other faculty members, and a significant turnout of students. Professor Jahan Ara pointed out the neglect of oral health care in Pakistan and stressed the necessity of annual dental cleanings and scaling, debunking rumors surrounding dental care practices.
Dr. Imtiaz Ahmed, Dean of the Department of Dentistry, invoked religious teachings that advocate for brushing teeth five times a day, reflecting on the importance Islam places on oral health. Despite this, he noted a lack of guidance and adherence to these practices among the public. Professor Ambreena Qureshi from the School of Dental Care Professionals mentioned the World Health Organization’s 44-point health action plan, which includes a solitary point dedicated to oral health, signaling the need for greater emphasis on this area.
The competition winners hailed from various dental schools within DUHS, with the team from Dow School of Dental securing first place, Dow Dental College taking second, and Dow International Dental College’s team coming third. The event concluded with recognition of the students’ efforts to promote oral health awareness, furthering the university’s mission to enhance health education and community service.
