Colombo, Sri Lanka’s cricket team has finalized its 17-member squad for the three-match One Day International (ODI) series against Zimbabwe, starting later this week in Colombo. The squad features a mix of experienced players and fresh talent, with all-rounder Dasun Shanaka retaining his place despite recent form concerns.
According to International Cricket Council, the Sri Lankan team has undergone several changes, including the appointment of Kusal Mendis as the new captain and Charith Asalanka as vice-captain. However, former captain and experienced all-rounder Angelo Mathews was not included in the squad. Mathews had been recalled to the team during the ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup in India but failed to secure a spot for the upcoming series.
Wanindu Hasaranga, recently named T20I captain, returns to the ODI squad after missing the World Cup due to injury. His participation, however, is contingent on his fitness. The squad also marks the return of Akila Dananjaya, who last played an ODI in 2021. His inclusion, along with Jeffrey Vandersay, Maheesh Theekshana, and Dunith Wellalage, strengthens the team’s spin bowling options.
Ajantha Mendis, a member of the selection committee, highlighted the importance of Dananjaya’s return, noting his wicket-taking abilities and the need for a backup for spinners like Theekshana and Hasaranga. Mendis emphasized the need to provide international exposure to players on the fringes, considering the limited opportunities in domestic cricket.
The pace attack will be led by Dilshan Madushanka, who impressed during the World Cup. He will be supported by Pramod Madushan, Dushmantha Chameera, and several medium-pace all-rounders.
Janith Liyanage, a batting all-rounder who played three T20Is in 2022, is also part of the squad and could potentially make his ODI debut.
The ODI series against Zimbabwe is set to begin on Saturday in Colombo and will be followed by a series of three T20Is. The series provides an opportunity for Sri Lanka to test its squad composition and strategies ahead of future international commitments.
