The Sindh Human Rights Policy sets a range of targets in various sectors which among others includes introduction of Human Rights Degree Programs at the University level; taking proactive measures to protect minority places of worship; bringing reforms in the curriculum to promote tolerance, discourage hate speech against the religious minorities. It also sets a target to address the defects in the criminal justice system, administration of justice, police service through the development and implementation of comprehensive policies and programmes and to develop a robust system for access of free legal aid to the vulnerable community and for redressed of complaints. The policy further, tasks the government of Sindh to devise an action plan to curb anti-women practices including forced marriages, “honour killings”, and sang chati.

Surendar Valasai, Special Assistant to Chief Minister Sindh for Human Rights termed approval of Policy a vivid example of commitment of PPP towards human rights and an explicit intent of the Government of Sindh to strive for ensuring the rights of the citizens living in the province. Valasai said that the actualization of the dream of having a Human Rights Policy in the province of Sindh would not have been possible without support and encouragement of Bilawal Bhutto Zardari, Chairperson, PPP and Syed Murad Ali Shah, Chief Minister Sindh.

He shared that the policy focuses on the promotion and protection of human rights in the light of fundamental Rights enshrined in the Constitution of Pakistan, commitments under Generalized Scheme of Preference Plus and United Nations Human Rights Treaty Obligations. Secretary Human Rights Department, Jawed Sibghatullah Mahar said that the Policy lays down the direction, the systems being put in place, the responsibilities being assigned to various departments towards ensuring the rights of the citizens. The Policy thus hinges on the intent for a strong inter-coordination among the line departments of the Government of Sindh and the Human Rights Department.
