Karachi, Punjab University’s Institute of Urdu Language and Literature organized an international conference on Wednesday, December 20, 2023, focusing on the significant contributions of Allama Iqbal and Muhammad Akif Ersoy to the history and culture of Pakistan and Turkiye. The event, held at Sheerani Hall, highlighted the enduring impact of these great thinkers on the independence movements and the development of their respective nations.
According to University of The Punjab, the conference featured prominent speakers including Turkiye’s Consul General, Mr. Durmus Bastug, who emphasized the role of Iqbal and Akif in shaping the national consciousness of Pakistan and Turkiye. He remarked on their active stance against the capitalist system and their enduring legacy as beacons of inspiration for the youth.
PU Vice Chancellor Prof. Dr. Khalid Mahmood reflected on the focus of Iqbal and Akif on the concept of freedom and their concern for the Muslim Ummah. He also touched upon the contemporary relevance of their teachings, particularly in the context of current events in Gaza, and the continued dominance of the English language post-independence.
Further contributions to the conference included insights from Home Economics University VC Prof. Dr. Faleeha Kazmi, who spoke about the transformative impact of Iqbal and Akif’s art on the mindset of nations. Dr. Khalil Toqar, Head of Yunus Emre Pakistan, highlighted the development of both Urdu and Turkish languages and the widespread recognition of Allama Iqbal in Turkiye.
The conference also featured academic presentations, including one by Dr. Saadat, and was attended by researchers, faculty members, and a large number of students. The discussions underscored the importance of Iqbal and Akif as eminent poets and thinkers in the Islamic world, with their messages continuing to inspire and guide contemporary generations.
