Karachi, The Pasban Democratic Party has sharply criticized K Electric (KE), Karachi’s primary electricity provider, for what it describes as twenty years of inadequate service and economic hardship imposed on the city’s residents. The party has voiced strong opposition to the renewal of KE’s license, citing ongoing issues like frequent load shedding, high bills, and safety concerns.
According to Pasban Democratic Party, the party leaders have accused KE of exacerbating the city’s economic crisis and failing to protect consumer rights. They allege that KE has been involved in corrupt practices and has not adequately responded to public inquiries about various charges in electricity bills. The party argues that the National Electric Power Regulatory Authority (NEPRA) has been complicit in these issues by supporting KE and failing to advocate for consumer rights.
Pasban’s statement also highlights the continuous load shedding in Karachi, even with the onset of winter, and cites incidents of fires and electrocution due to poor infrastructure. The party claims that KE has removed copper wires from the city without accounting for them to the public, leading to safety hazards. The Pasban Democratic Party is calling for the immediate government takeover of electric power in Karachi and suggests that various companies should be given the opportunity to provide more affordable electricity to the city’s consumers.
The party leaders express the frustration of consumers with expensive electricity, the looting in the name of fuel adjustment, and the worst load shedding, stating that the people of Karachi, a high revenue-generating city, can no longer bear the burden of these issues. They demand that the parliament be empowered to make decisions about electricity rates, allowing the public to be aware of the performance of their representatives and ensuring transparency and accountability in the sector.
