Islamabad, The Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) has formally written to the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP), requesting the removal of five election symbols from the approved list due to their resemblance to the party’s symbol, the Arrow.
According to Pakistan People’s Party, the letter addressed to the Honourable Chief Election Commissioner of Pakistan, based in Islamabad, highlights the party’s concerns regarding potential voter confusion. The PPP’s letter lists five symbols – Pencil, Ballpoint Pen, Pen, Screwdriver, and Toothbrush – which it argues bear a close resemblance to its Arrow symbol.
The PPP’s request is grounded in the precedent of a 2018 bye-election case where the High Court upheld Mr. Jehangir Tareen’s request to remove an election symbol similar to his. The party argues that the resemblance of the mentioned symbols to its Arrow is closer than the case upheld by the High Court.
The letter emphasizes the risk that voters might mistakenly stamp their votes on these similar symbols, potentially affecting the party’s electoral outcomes. The PPP has urged the ECP to consider the seriousness of this issue and take appropriate action by removing these symbols from the approved list.
This request signifies the PPP’s vigilance in safeguarding the distinctiveness of its electoral symbol and ensuring clarity for voters in the electoral process.
