Pakistan Celebrates International Day of the Markhor, Emphasizes Conservation Success

Islamabad, In a message marking the International Day of the Markhor on May 24, 2024, Acting President of Pakistan, Syed Yousuf Raza Gillani, extolled the conservation successes that have allowed the national animal to rebound from near extinction. The day, recognized by the United Nations, underscores the importance of continued efforts in wildlife preservation and the role of collective action in overcoming environmental challenges.

According to Pakistan Peoples Party, President Gillani highlighted the Markhor as a symbol of Pakistan’s natural heritage and its commitment to environmental stewardship. He recounted the Markhor’s recovery as an inspiring story of hope and a model for successful conservation practices that involve government, local communities, and international partners.

President Gillani also announced Pakistan’s elevation to CITES Category I, reflecting significant advancements in the country’s wildlife legislation and enforcement. He called for renewed commitment to protecting natural habitats and addressing the broader challenges posed by climate change, ensuring the continued prosperity of the Markhor and other wildlife species.
