Karachi, The Pakistan Federation Baseball (PFB) has announced the formation of the Pakistan Baseball League (PBL), a new professional league aimed at fostering talent and increasing the sport’s visibility within the region.
According to Pakistan Federation Baseball, the decision to launch the PBL follows the successful organization of the Chief Minister Punjab Baseball League in Lahore, which was supported by the enthusiasm of Chief Minister Punjab Maryam Nawaz, a former baseball player herself. The league is envisioned by Syed Fakhr Ali Shah, Secretary General of PFB and CEO of PBL, and son of the late Syed Khawar Shah, who was instrumental in introducing baseball and softball in Pakistan.
Syed Fakhr Ali Shah expressed his vision for the PBL as a transformative platform that will not only elevate the sport in Pakistan but also serve as a symbol of unity and excellence across the region. The league aims to showcase local talent that has been largely underrepresented on the professional stage due to challenges such as lack of exposure, limited resources, and insufficient opportunities to participate in international events.
The initiative is set to invite players from Pakistan, India, Sri Lanka, West Asia, and other member states of the Baseball Federation of Asia, providing them a much-needed platform to demonstrate their skills to scouts and agents. Furthermore, the league seeks to improve Pakistan’s standing in the World Baseball Classic and the WBSC rankings, where Pakistan currently holds the 21st position.
The federation faces significant challenges, particularly the non-availability of dedicated baseball stadiums, which impacts the ability to attract international players and sponsors. PFB’s media coordinator, Pervaiz Ahmed Sheikh, emphasized the need for collaborative efforts to realize the potential of baseball in Pakistan and turn it into a $100 million industry within five years, thereby boosting employment, exports, tourism, and the country’s global image.
The league is calling on baseball fans, business leaders, and government officials to support this initiative, which promises to create a lasting legacy and inspire future generations of baseball players in Pakistan and beyond.
