Islamabad Faces Criticism Over Blocking Social Media Platform “X”

Islamabad, The controversial blocking of the social media platform “X” has stirred significant debate and criticism in Pakistan, with key political figures and institutions involved in a convoluted narrative of denial and admission. Farhatullah Babar, President of the Human Rights Cell of the Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) and former senator, has openly criticized the government’s decision to block the platform, describing it as an authoritarian move that undermines democracy, education, and the economy.

According to Pakistan Peoples Party, the Ministry of Interior, after a prolonged period of denial, acknowledged in the Sindh High Court that it had blocked “X” based on recommendations from intelligence agencies. This admission came amid widespread confusion and lack of transparency, with various government bodies providing contradictory accounts of their involvement in the suspension. The blocking was initially instigated following accusations by a senior bureaucrat in Rawalpindi against high-ranking officials for allegedly rigging the elections held on February 8, leading to no subsequent investigation or accountability.

The Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA), tasked with regulating internet content, was cited for its confusion and inaction, failing to comply with multiple court orders to restore access to “X”. This situation is exacerbated by the PTA chief’s history of working in different governmental sectors, further complicating the agency’s response to the judiciary.

The federal Minister of Information acknowledged the absence of any formal notification regarding the platform’s suspension, raising questions about the transparency and legality of the government’s actions. The PPP’s statement emphasizes the need for immediate reforms within the PTA and a reinstatement of fair governance practices concerning social media regulation, underscoring the pressing need for accountability and respect for democratic principles in managing digital platforms.
