Lahore, At the 7th International Conference on Health Professions Education (ICHPE), a symposium titled “Accreditation Systems: Pathways to Excellence” brought together esteemed global health experts to discuss the crucial role of accreditation in shaping the future of medical education. The event, organized by the University College of Medicine & Dentistry (UCMD) at The University of Lahore (UOL), underscored the importance of accreditation in enhancing and standardizing medical education worldwide.
According to University of Lahore, speakers at the symposium, including Prof Ricardo León-Bórquez (President, World Federation of Medical Education (WFME)), Prof Mahwish Arooj (Principal, UCM and Director of Medical Education (DME)), Mr Azim Mirzazadeh (Iranian Society of Medical Educationists (IRSOME)), and Dr Usman Mahboob (Associate Prof, Institute of Health Professions Education & Research, Khyber Medical University), shared their insights on how accreditation contributes to the quality, effectiveness, and relevance of medical training and practice.
The symposium served as a platform for discussing the evolution of medical education standards and the need for a balanced approach to global standards, addressing specific needs and cultural distinctions in different countries. The discussions highlighted the flexibility and professional judgment that principle-based standards, such as those of WFME, offer. They also touched upon the unique challenges and approaches of different countries, including Iran’s blend of standardization and contextualization in accreditation.
The session concluded with a collective call to action, emphasizing the importance of understanding and integrating contextual factors into the accreditation process. This initiative aims to not only maintain standards of quality but to also drive continuous improvement and excellence in medical education globally.
