Lahore, Renowned cricket coach Gary Kirsten is set to begin his role as the white-ball head coach for Pakistan’s national cricket team in Leeds on May 19, 2024, just days before their T20I series against England. His arrival marks a significant moment for Pakistan cricket as they gear up for the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup later this year.
According to Pakistan Cricket Board, Kirsten, a former South African cricketer, joins the team with a wealth of experience and a two-year contract, aiming to guide Pakistan through not only the upcoming World Cup in the USA and Caribbean but also several major international tournaments including the ICC Champions Trophy 2025 and the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2026. His tenure will commence with the four-match T20I series against England at Headingley, starting on May 22.
The PCB has also introduced additional support for the players, appointing Simon Helmot as fielding coach and David Reid as mental performance coach for the duration of the World Cup. Reid, a Qualified Mental Health Clinician with extensive experience in sports psychology, is expected to join the team on May 20 and focus on enhancing the players’ mental resilience and performance.
PCB Chairman Mohsin Naqvi emphasized the strategic importance of these appointments, stating that the mental well-being of players is crucial for their performance on the field. The board’s decision to bolster the coaching staff reflects a comprehensive approach to ensure the team is well-prepared and supported across all aspects of the game.
