Bahawalpur, September 27, 2023 (PPI-OT): To explore the challenges posed by newer forms of communication on social networks and tools offered by Artificial Intelligence, to address those challenges, the Department of English Linguistics the Islamia University of Bahawalpur organized a two-day International Conference titled ‘Corpus Tools and Language Sciences: Exploring the Intersection of Artificial Intelligence and Applied Linguistics’. On the first day, research scholars from Department of Linguistics, University of Okara and Department of English Linguistics presented their presentations.
On the 2nd day, three speakers from Institute of Corpus Studies and Applications, Shanghai International Studies University, China called upon the Vice Chancellor, Prof. Dr. Naveed Akhtar in his office and exchanged views of mutual interests. The Chinese speakers shared their findings on how Artificial Intelligence was empowering humanities in the form of tools of Artificial Intelligence available for Discourse Analysis.
Prof. Dr. Hu Kaibao, Assistant President of Shanghai International Studies University, China, Dean of Institute of Corpus Studies and Applications, China, Prof. Dr. Geng Qiang, Vice Dean of Institute of Corpus Studies and Applications, China, Dr. Muhammad Afzaal, Associate Professor Institute of Corpus Studies and Applications, China delivered their talks. Dr. Riaz Hussain, head, Department of English Linguistics gave a comprehensive talk on advantages and disadvantages of Artificial Intelligence and how it was being used in language analysis tools.
The sessions on the synergy of AI and Corpus technology were chaired by Dr. Tahira Asgher , Dr. Zahoor Hussain, Dr. Waseem Hassan Gillani, faculty members , Dept. of English Linguistics. Prof. Dr. Mamuna Ghani Director ETC, and Dr. Muhammad Ilyas Mahmood, Head, Department of Linguistics University of Okara were guests of honour on the occasion. Prof. Dr. Jawad Iqbal, Director Academics and Dean Faculty of Management Sciences and Commerce also addressed the conference attendees.
The Chinese speakers had a meeting with Prof. Dr. Jawed Hassaan Chandio, Dean Faculty of Arts and Languages, discussed avenues of collaborations, and explored possibilities of building corpora for regional languages of Pakistan. The conference concluded with recommendations of the conference declaimed by the focal person, Dr. Riaz Hussain, Associate Prof and Head, Dept. of English Linguistics the Islamia University of Bahawalpur.
