Thirteen Balochistan CCA U19 squads for 50-over tournament named

Lahore, September 06, 2021 (PPI-OT):Thirteen City Cricket Association sides of the Balochistan Cricket Association were announced today for the U19 City Cricket Association 50-over Tournament 2021-22, which will be held in the Balochistan province from 9 to 23 September.

The tournaments in Central Punjab, Northern, Sindh and Southern Punjab are underway from 5 September, while the event in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa will get underway from 7 September.

The Balochistan event is commencing after the conclusion of the age verification process of the players. As per the ICC’s eligibility criteria for the ICC U19 Cricket World Cup West Indies 2022, players born on or after 1 September 2002 will be eligible for selection.

The 50-over tournament has been designed to provide budding youngsters with an opportunity to not only impress the selectors for next year’s ICC U19 Cricket World Cup West Indies 2022, but also earn their nod for the National U19 Championship (three-day event) and National U19 Cup (one-day tournament). The two domestic events will be played from 3 October to 12 November.

The sides have been selected through a robust and merit-based open trials system, which were conducted by the national junior selection committee, national selectors and second XI head coaches. All the trials were filmed by the team analysts and took place in the presence of independent Cricket Association observers.

The U19 50-over tournament is a continuation of the CCA two-day tournament, which were held across the country with an aim to provide the talented youngsters with a chance to shine in the pre-season events. These events were organised by the PCB, taking into consideration that limited cricket activity at grassroots and CCA-level was held due to the Covid-19 pandemic.

Like the CCA two-day tournament, the U19 50-over competition matches are covered digitally.

Rahul fined for breaching ICC Code of Conduct

Dubai, September 05, 2021 (PPI-OT):India opener KL Rahul has been fined 15 percent of his match fee for breaching Level 1 of the ICC Code of Conduct during the third day of the fourth Test against England at The Oval.

Rahul was found to have breached Article 2.8 of the ICC Code of Conduct for Players and Player Support Personnel, which relates to “showing dissent at an Umpire’s decision during an International Match.”

In addition to this, one demerit point has been added to the disciplinary record of Rahul, for whom it was the first offence in a 24-month period.

The incident occurred in the 34th over of India’s second innings on Saturday, when Rahul showed dissent on being adjudged caught behind the wicket following a DRS review.

Rahul admitted the offence and accepted the sanction proposed by Chris Broad of the Emirates ICC Elite Panel of Match Referees and ratified by the ICC Cricket Operations department as per the COVID-19 interim playing regulations. There was no need for a formal hearing.

On-field umpires Richard Illingworth and Alex Wharf, third umpire Michael Gough and fourth official Mike Burns levelled the charges.

Level 1 breaches carry a minimum penalty of an official reprimand, a maximum penalty of 50 per cent of a player’s match fee, and one or two demerit points.

Cricket Association squads for 2021-22 season announced –

Lahore, September 04, 2021 (PPI-OT):The six Cricket Association squads for the 2021-22 domestic season have been unveiled. Each squad was selected by the head coach, chairperson and chief executive of the respective Cricket Association in the presence of national men’s chief selector Muhammad Wasim, Nadeem Khan, High Performance Director, Junaid Zia, Domestic Cricket General Manager and chief executives of the other Cricket Associations as observers.

Each Cricket Association squad comprises 40 players – 32 of which will be awarded domestic contracts, to be announced in due course – along with 10 additional players. Every Cricket Association will name 16 players ahead of the First XI and Second XI tournaments, and these players can be transferred between the two teams.

While majority of players from the 2020-21 domestic season were retained, the gaps in each of the six sides were plugged with top performers of the City Cricket Association tournaments, after head coaches had a close look at them in the pre-season training camps that were held last week at each of the six Cricket Associations.

The selected players are:

Balochistan – Aftab Ahmed (Loralai), Fahad Hussain (Jaffarabad), Mohammad Idrees (Quetta), Mohammad Javed (Pishin), Sana Ullah (Loralai), Shoaib Ahmed (Lasbela), Syed Zainullah (Pishin) and Tariq Jameel (Loralai)

Central Punjab – Asad Ali Jnr (Hafizabad), Gohar Hafeez Butt, Haider Ali (both Lahore), Mohammad Faizan (Faisalabad), Mohammad Tabraiz (Sialkot), Mohammad Waheed (Lahore) and Mudassar Riaz (Faisalabad)

Khyber Pakhtunkhwa – Aitzaz Habib Khan (Mardan), Farhan Khan (Mohmand), Khayyam Khan (Swabi), Mashal Khan (Haripur), Mohammad Ibrahim (Swabi), Mohammad Tahir (Bannu), Niaz Khan (Swat) and Yasir Khan (Bannu)

Northern – Aqib Liaqat (Poonch), Asad Raza (Faisalabad), Hamza Arshad, Kashif Ali (both Rawalpindi), Sadaqat Ali (Faisalabad), Sarmad Hameed (Jhelum) and Zaman Khan (Mirpur)

Sindh – Asif Mehmood (Hyderabad), Imtiaz Leghari (Khairpur), Junaid Ilyas, Khuzaima Bin Tanveer, Mohammad Afzal, Mohammad Shahid Mihrani (all four Karachi), Mushtaq Ahmed Kalhoro (Sukkur) and Usman Khan (Karachi)

Southern Punjab – Ali Majid (Khanewal), Humayun Altaf (Lodhran), Kaleem Ullah (Layyah), Mohammad Sharoon Siraj (Sahiwal), Mohammad Jahangir (DG Khan), Mohammad Shahriyar and Mohammad Sudais (both Muzzafargarh) and Moin-ud-Din (Bahawalpur)

This move is in line with the PCB’s policy of incentivising and rewarding top performers at each rung of domestic cricket and setting a clear pathway for graduation to the next level.

The head coaches of the six Cricket Associations, who served as lead selectors of their sides, retained the core players, following which the remaining players were sent to a selection pool from where they were picked by other teams.

Balochistan’s squad includes 55 per cent local players, which is a jump by 10 per cent from the last season as the PCB continues its efforts to develop the game in the province and provide opportunities to the youth to establish their careers as cricketers.

In line with the promotion of the sport in the province, the PCB will commence the 2021-22 season from Quetta’s picturesque Bugti Stadium with the Cricket Associations T20 tournament starting on 15 September.

The six squads will gather at the major centres in their jurisdictions for the pre-season camp from Sunday.

Balochistan will have their camp at Quetta’s Bugti Stadium, Central Punjab’s will be conducted at LCCA Ground, Lahore, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa’s at Abbottabad Cricket Stadium, Northern’s at House of Northern, Islamabad, Sindh’s at National Stadium, Karachi and Southern Punjab’s at Multan Cricket Stadium.

Balochistan head coach Faisal Iqbal: “The CCA tournament provided a great opportunity to me to watch the upcoming cricketers of Balochistan and it helped me in further increasing the percentage of players in the squad. Last year, we had 45 per cent local players, which has now gone up to 55 per cent, which is a great sign for Balochistan cricket. Many of these top performers will be getting opportunities in the Second XI side, so when they reach the First XI team, they are well-prepared for the challenge, and can progress to Pakistan team.”

Karachi, September 03, 2021 (PPI-OT):On September 3, 2010, two media staffers – Samaa TV camera operator Ejaz Raisani and Aaj News driver Muhammad Sarwar – were killed in a suicide attack on a procession in Quetta, the capital city of the Balochistan province that claimed the lives of at least 64 people and over 160 injured in the blast. The procession was organised by the Shiite Imamia Students’ Organisation to mark Al Quds Day to express solidarity with the Palestinians.

On the fateful day, the journalists were covering a protest march when the suicide bomb went off, which was then followed by shooting. The people participating in the procession then started firing, triggering chaos and panic. People fled or lay on the ground to avoid the gunfire. Several people, including journalists, were injured as a result of the shots.

Pakistan Press Foundation (PPF) commemorates the lives of the two media staffers who lost their lives in the incident and recognizes their role on the frontlines. The incident also left several media workers injured thus highlighting the need for media on the frontline to be provided with the necessary safety equipment.

Of the two media workers who lost their lives, Sarwar died on the spot after being struck by bullets while Raisani was injured in the blast receiving two bullet wounds. Three days later, on September 6, he died. Speaking to PPF, Sarwar’s brother Anwar said Sarwar was the only breadwinner of their family as Anwar was studying at the time. Anwar said that Aaj News had provided them with a lot of help at the time. However, he was unhappy with the investigation process and the government’s support.

Aaj News Quetta Bureau Chief Mujeeb Ahmed said that Sarwar was passionate about his work and drove safely. He said Sarwar was away from the zone but due to the firing, died on the spot. Samaa TV Quetta Bureau Chief Jalal Noorzai said that Raisani was died and a reporter Noor Elahi Bugti were injured in the incident. He recalled that Raisani was “very passionate and hardworking.

According to Noorzai, Raisani was the only breadwinner of his family and the network has helped his family by bearing his children’s expenditures. Initially they were given Rs1 million and they continued to pay Raisani’s salary to his wife. Quetta Press Club President Khaliq Rind said that he had good working relations with Raisani who he described as “very enthusiastic and dedicated to his work [at a] young age”. “His death was a major loss [to the] media community,” he said.

Media workers injured

Several other journalists were injured including a reporter for Samaa TV Noor Elahi Bugti, the bureau chief for ARY News Mustafa Tareen, a camera operator Aminullah Mengal, a camera operator for Express News Shahid Mukhtar, a reporter for Express News Irshad Mastoi, camera operator for Geo News Imran Mukhtar, and camera operator for Dawn News Fateh Shakir. Angry protestors had also fired gunshots at the Direct Satellite News Gathering (DSNG) vans of the TV channels Aaj News, Dunya TV, Express News and Dawn News.

Bugti told PPF that he was injured on his head and arm. He was initially treated at CMH after which he was treated at Civil Hospital for 12 days According to Bugti, there were no safety precautions or life jackets available at the news organisation at the time which he believed was the reason cameraman Raisani had died and that he was injured. He said that it was the practice at the time and many journalists died while reporting in Quetta.

Now Bugti is the AbbTakk News Bureau Chief and he makes sure that all precautionary equipment is available for every cameraman, reporter and other crew members. Another of the injured media workers, Mengal said that he received minor injuries in the incident and his left arm was still not fully functional. Mengal was treated at the CMH for a day but his employers ARY News supported his treatment at Aga Khan University Hospital. Two months after the incident, Mengal re-joined work. He continues to work as ARY News Quetta as a senior cameraman and now with complete safety precautions.

Injured in the incident, Shakir who is now Balochistan Union of Journalists General Secretary and 24 News senior cameraman said that no safety measures were taken at the time. After the incident, Dawn had provided them with life jackets. However, at his current employers, 24 News, no one is following such measures for safety.

Shakir said that after the incident the fear of [losing] his life has become permanent. He advised young journalists that they are going to report and cover the news and shouldn’t become the news story themselves. “First think of your families and follow all basic security measures,” he said, adding that he was disheartened when his employer organisation had not supported him. He said that they had not covered either medical or other expenses.

Tehreek-i-Taliban Pakistan’s (TTP) suicide wing Qari Hussain had said the attacks had been carried out by Taliban suicide bombers. However, Lashkar-e-Jhangvi also claimed responsibility for the attack and had said a 22-year-old suicide bomber Rashid Moaawia carried out the attack.

Then Balochistan home secretary Akbar Hussain Durrani said that the organisers of the procession had been alerted to the threat. Bomb disposal squad officials said the device packed 15 kilograms of explosives. The impact of the blast smashed windows of a number of shops and buildings. All shopping centres and business establishments shuttered down after an angry mob set several vehicles on fire and ransacked some shops.

According to The Express Tribune, police had taken 20 suspects into custody and then Balochistan chief minister had formed a judicial tribunal to investigate the attack. City Police Station Head Moharar Shabbir told PPF that Lashkar-e-Jhangvi was responsible for the attack but no one was arrested from the militant group. He said that police had arrested the organisers of the protest rally. Later, however, the Anti-Terrorism Court in Quetta had closed the case and granted them all bail.
