Aga Khan University Partners with UNICEF to Boost Early Childhood Development in Pakistan

Karachi, In a significant step to enhance early childhood development (ECD) for vulnerable populations in Pakistan, the Aga Khan University’s Human Development Programme (AKU-HDP) has entered into a collaboration with the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF). A Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) formalizing this partnership was signed by AKU Vice Provost, Dr. Salim Virani, and UNICEF Country Representative Mr. Abdullah Abdulaziz Fadil.

According to The Aga Khan University, the two-year initiative titled ‘Reducing Inequalities by Enhancing Early Childhood Development for Vulnerable Population in Pakistan’ aims to develop a comprehensive ECD manual. This guide will encompass all elements of the nurturing care framework, along with other significant aspects necessary for promoting the optimal development of children from birth to eight years. The project also plans to establish a sustainable network of ECD master trainers to ensure ongoing knowledge dissemination across the country.

Dr. Salman Kirmani, Interim Director at AKU-HDP, expressed enthusiasm about the collaboration, emphasizing the program’s commitment to providing every child in Pakistan the chance to thrive, irrespective of their socio-economic background. He highlighted the project’s goal of creating a brighter future for Pakistani children through targeted developmental initiatives.

Moreover, Dr. Salim Virani remarked on the importance of ECD as a critical area of focus globally, particularly in developing countries. He noted that robust early development forms the cornerstone for lifelong health, educational success, and economic productivity, making it imperative to invest in young children’s development to maximize their future well-being.

The collaboration will involve the creation of educational materials and modules, including a specialized guidebook on ECD in emergency situations. ECD workers throughout Pakistan will be trained using these resources to assist institutional and local authorities in planning, coordinating, monitoring, and evaluating ECD programs. AKU-HDP also plans to leverage existing data and conduct operational research to generate evidence that will inform decision-making and improve child development outcomes.

UNICEF Regional Head Mr. Abdullah Abdulaziz Fadil emphasized the need to integrate ECD concepts into community practices, stating that basic care practices are often overlooked. He advocated for a demystification of ECD and the adoption of globally sourced ideas tailored to local contexts.

This partnership between AKU-HDP and UNICEF represents a crucial effort to realize the potential of Pakistan’s children, particularly those in vulnerable situations, by embedding strong foundational development practices from an early age.
