Karachi, in a significant family reunion, Dr. Fowzia Siddiqui was able to meet her sister Dr. Aafia Siddiqui in a U.S. prison after overcoming numerous bureaucratic hurdles.
According to Aafia Movement, the long-awaited meeting took place at FMC Carswell prison with some initial delays. Scheduled for 8:30 AM, it only occurred after a two-hour wait, during which time the prison administration made several improvements, including repairing a faulty telephone and cleaning the glass partition, enhancing Dr. Fowzia’s ability to see her sister clearly. The delay was apparently due to preparations needed to ready Aafia for the encounter.
During the emotional reunion, Dr. Fowzia, speaking from Texas, shared that such visits, along with Aafia’s interactions with local lawyers, have been pivotal in mitigating her sufferings. The conversation deeply touched on personal memories, particularly about their deceased mother, whom Aafia revered as deserving of a global award for best mother, lamenting that her talents and educational achievements were never recognized by the authorities.
Moreover, Aafia conveyed her gratitude towards her supporters, attributing her survival in prison to their prayers and urged continued efforts for her early release. However, the meeting also revealed distressing details about Aafia’s condition; Dr. Fowzia noted visible distress on her sister’s face and was moved to tears by her appearance. The sisters then spent a long period in silence, reflecting the emotional weight of the reunion.
Dr. Fowzia also mentioned an incident where Aafia’s scarf was taken and her funds withheld by prison authorities. Fortunately, during this visit, Aafia received a new scarf, although she was reportedly punished previously for allegedly damaging her bedding. Dr. Fowzia had attempted to provide scarves in earlier visits to help Aafia during the winter, but these too were confiscated.
The presence of American lawyer Clive Stafford Smith highlighted the legal attention the case is receiving. He faced his own challenges with the prison officials, who were initially unaware of his scheduled follow-up meeting with Aafia, a situation he resolved by presenting a confirmation email.
