Karachi Faces Collective Punishment with Load Shedding Despite Bill Payments, PPP Official Claims

Karachi, amid soaring temperatures and ongoing environmental changes, the city is reportedly experiencing severe load shedding policies that affect even those who regularly pay their electricity bills.

According to Pakistan Peoples Party, Deputy Secretary Asif Khan during a visit to a heatwave relief camp organized by the People’s Student Federation, criticized K Electric for its handling of the electricity supply in Karachi. He described the situation as a form of collective punishment where paying customers suffer alongside those who steal electricity. This system, he argued, unjustly affects all residents irrespective of their compliance with billing.

The camp visit also saw discussions on the broader implications of climate change on urban centers like Karachi, where rising temperatures could be mitigated by initiatives such as urban forestry. Khan highlighted the crucial role of the youth in fostering peace and addressing environmental challenges, praising the initiative by the People’s Student Federation. Despite the community efforts, Khan pointed out the inadequacies in the response from K Electric to the escalating heat due to climate change, accusing them of exacerbating the situation with their load shedding measures. He urged the federal government to intervene and ensure the protection of citizen rights against what he termed as ‘electric oppression.’
