Punjab University Hosts Book Talk on Sikh Rule and Religious Tolerance

Lahore, Punjab University Pakistan Study Centre recently organized a book talk in conjunction with International Human Rights Day. The event focused on the book titled ‘Muslims under Sikh Rule in the 19th Century: Maharaja Ranjit Singh and Religious Tolerance’ by Dr. Robina Yasmeen, Chairperson, Department of Pakistan Studies at Islamia University, Bahawalpur.

According to University of The Punjab, the book talk featured discussions led by renowned historian and former Director of the Pakistan Study Centre, Prof. Dr. Muhammad Iqbal Chawla, and the current Director, Prof. Dr. Naumana Kiran. Dr. Chawla highlighted the main features of the book, while Dr. Yasmeen addressed common misconceptions about Sikh rule, particularly regarding Maharaja Ranjit Singh. She elaborated on the policies adopted by the Sikh leader and their impacts on Muslims, emphasizing that Maharaja Ranjit Singh was fair to all communities, including Muslims, thereby showcasing his leadership beyond religious lines.

Faculty members and students from various departments attended the event, where Prof. Dr. Naumana Kiran also shed light on the significance of the topic and the contents of the book. The talk provided insights into the historical context of religious tolerance and coexistence during Sikh rule in the 19th century.
