Lahore, August 11, 2023 (PPI-OT):In just a few short decades, Pakistan has embarked on an incredible journey of transformation, surpassing the challenges of its early beginnings in 1947 to emerge as a determined and steadfast nuclear weapon state today. This extraordinary trajectory speaks volumes about the nation’s unwavering resolve, resilience, and relentless pursuit of progress. Defying expectations and rising above adversity, Pakistan stands tall as a testament to its indomitable spirit and ability to overcome obstacles. Even in the face of challenges, the nation’s unwavering optimism lights the way to a future filled with promise and potential.
Pakistan’s promising ascent at 76 is fueled by a myriad of factors. Its youth, coupled with abundant natural resources and strategic geopolitical positioning, form the bedrock of this hopeful rise. The nation’s entrepreneurial spirit, cultural vibrancy, educational advancements, and infrastructure developments like CPEC contribute to its potential for economic growth, innovation, and regional connectivity. Diplomatic outreach, evolving social awareness, and a resolute spirit of resilience further shape a bright future, marked by positive societal change. Together, these elements merge to paint an encouraging outlook for Pakistan, laden with prospects of progress and transformation.
I am an incorrigible optimist. I believe that Pakistan is often gravely misunderstood, not just by its own people, but also by those who observe it from outside its borders. Pakistan, in its quest for self-discovery, will undergo numerous transformations. Throughout this endeavor, Pakistan will embody different meanings to different individuals. It will witness the ebb and flow of democracy, learning invaluable lessons along the way. It will encounter rampant corruption on an immense scale, yet it shall endure. A future generation will arise, enlightened by the consequences of experimenting with military or authoritarian rule, and will recognise the intrinsic value of democracy. Another generation will emerge, empowered by the wisdom gained from proxy experiments, and vehemently say “no more”. Nevertheless, we have not yet arrived at this destination, but inch closer with each passing moment.
As we strive for progress, mistakes will inevitably be made, but lessons will be learned. Ultimately, Pakistan need not conform to the world’s expectations; its own aspirations are paramount. Let us grow without the weight of judgment, mindful that we are merely at the dawn of our seventh decade of existence. Only the seventh! May the world extend us the opportunity to flourish, embracing the unique path we choose to traverse.
The problem is, that while Pakistan is in this process of learning and making mistakes, falling and rising, the world is not letting it breathe. If it were left up to me, there would be a figurative Berlin wall around Pakistan, where Pakistan would hang the board and say: “Recess. Time Out. We aren’t available for anybody. We want to heal. Time out.” And the world would leave us alone. Imagine the incredible potential if we could persuade Pakistan’s top 10 billionaires to invest in their own country for a mere 5 years, refraining from taking their wealth elsewhere. We would implore them to contribute to the development of Pakistan, fostering growth and innovation from within.
It is important to acknowledge that the journey towards maturity encompasses both missteps and enlightenment. Ultimately, Pakistan’s progress should be determined by its own aspirations rather than the expectations of the world. Whenever Pakistan is playing a cricket match, no matter which team is on the other end, it is always Pakistan vs Pakistan, trying to win from itself or lose to itself. And as long as you understand this about Pakistan, you will never lose hope.
As a relatively young nation in its seventh decade of existence, our time thus far has been fleeting. Let us embrace the freedom to evolve without subjecting ourselves to external judgments on the path we have chosen. As a unified nation, let us also cultivate kindness and empathy towards one another. Let us carve out room for self-reflection and personal growth, abstaining from harsh self-judgment.
