Bahawalpur, March 21, 2023 (PPI-OT): Islamia University Bahawalpur, Department of Geography and Directorate of Alumni Affairs organized a reunion meeting of 250 graduates of Islamia University Bahawalpur (1985-2022). Dean Faculty of Physical and Mathematical Sciences Prof. Dr. Saeed Ahmad Buzdar as Chief Guest and Director Alumni Affairs Dr. Azhar Hussain as Guest of Honour. IAA Faculty of Physical and Mathematical Sciences Dr. Muhammad Asghar also participated in the meeting.

Chairman of the Department of Geography Professor Dr. Sher Muhammad Malik addressed the former students and thanked them for coming to the university. On this occasion, Incharge Alumni Affairs, Department of Geography, Mohammad Hasnain welcomed the alumni students and guests. He said that in Islamia University Bahawalpur, under the patronage of Vice Chancellor Engineer Professor Dr. Athar Mehboob, university alumni are being brought together on a platform so that they can join the university.

Faculty of Languages and Literature Organises Annual Get-Together: Honours Faculty and Employees

Islamabad, March 21, 2023 (PPI-OT): The Faculty of Languages and Literature (FLL) organized its annual faculty get-together. This is an annual tradition wherein all departments of FLL come together to celebrate each other’s success and to interact with each other in a lively and informal manner.

Dr. Ayaz Afsar, Vice President Academics was the chief guest. Lauding the efforts of the faculty, Dr. Ayaz Afsar, Vice President Academics assured of maximum support and cooperation. He said that the Faculty of Languages and Literature is the first faculty to implement this part of the new strategic plan. He appreciated the gesture of acknowledging people and hoped that it would continue in future as well.

Speaking on the occasion, Dr. Najeeba Arif, Dean FLL, showed satisfaction over the performance of the faculty in the past one year. She said that spring is the month of revival and optimism and it is with this spirit that the FLL would move forward to achieve greater successes in the coming year. Dr. Najeeba also announced two award categories on the occasion: the best employee award of the year 2022-23 and the best faculty member award of the year 2022-23. Two awards were given for each category in every department, to equally acknowledge the contributions of both the male and female wings.

From the Dean office, Mr. Sharafat Hussain was given the best employee award. In the Urdu department, Ms. Shazia Sarwar and Mr. Hassan Mujtaba were given the best employee awards while Dr. Aziz Ibn ul Hassan and Dr. Naeema Bibi were declared the best faculty members. Mr. Aqib Khan and Mr. Shahzad Saleem earned the best employee award while awards of the best faculty member went to Dr. Asma Mansoor and Mr. Syed Rashid Mehmood. In the CLT unit, the best employee awards went to Mr. Yasir Ali and Ms. Nosheen Asif while Ms. Aneela Naz and Mr. Mohammad Nadeem were given the best faculty member award.

Dr. Najeeba Arif said that this was a team-based acknowledgement of their colleagues and its purpose was to motivate everyone in FLL to carry on working in the same vein. She further added that the faculty members were given awards based upon their notable research output, outstanding student feedback and the extra administrative tasks they perform; the employees were given awards for their diligence, alacrity, reliability and a positive personal demeanour.

IIUI-BIC Joins ICSTSI Islamabad for Startup Competitions Among Universities

Islamabad, March 21, 2023 (PPI-OT): The Business Incubation Centre (BIC) of International Islamic University Islamabad IIU-BIC as part of its entrepreneurial drive has joined hands with Islamabad Chamber of Small Traders and Small Industries (ICSTSI) to organize a Twin Cities Startup Competition in collaboration with COMSATS University Islamabad, where 35 startups from over 11 universities took part in this event. Chairman Pakistan Science Foundation Prof. Dr. Shahid Mahmood Baig (SI) graced his presence as a Chief Guest during the opening ceremony of this event. In his remarks Dr. Shahid said that it made him extremely happy that young innovators are engaging in development and entrepreneurship and lauded the efforts of IIU-BIC and ICSTSI for joining hands to strengthen Academia-Industry linkages.

Ms. Noshaba Awais, Director (RI), Higher Education Commission (HEC) Islamabad was guest of honour who encouraged startups to keep working hard and become driving force behind positive change in the society. Mr. Muhammad Jamil (Executive Member ICSTSI) and Mr. Aqeel Abbasi, Executive Member ICSTSI, appreciated about the response from all participating universities for engagement in this competition and lauded the response by IIU-BIC to support this competition, on this occasion he also appreciated the cooperation by COMSATS Islamabad for providing the venue for this activity.

According to details the top 10 startups from this competition will be invited to take part in the Business Expo 2023 in which is going to be held during the month of May, 2023 being organized by ICSTSI, in which all will get a chance to interact with industry, promote their business models and also get an opportunity to get into joint collaborations. Earlier, Engr. Muhammad Ahsen Mirza, Director IIU-BIC in his opening remarks emphasized that these activities are the foundations to get startups recognized, however it is extremely important for startups to have strong willingness if they are to become entrepreneurs.

Engr. Usama Bin Mansoor, Assistant Director IIU-BIC, who was among the jury members to evaluate participating startups also spoke on this occasion and lauded role of ICSTSI to take a positive step to collaborate with IIUI, which he hoped would be a continuous process and many such activities would be organized in the near future. He added that that all startups competing should find methods of working together especially in this difficult economic situation, so that more viable solutions can come forward and support the local eco-system.

AKU honours Donor’s Generosity for Legacy Gift

Karachi, March 21, 2023 (PPI-OT): The Aga Khan University held a plaque unveiling ceremony on March 21, 2023, to recognise its longstanding donor, Mr Abdul Rehman Kanji by naming the newly built University Centre after his late son Alyshah Kanji. The building is the first high-rise facility on the Stadium Road campus in Karachi. Completed in 2021, the 17-storey state-of-the-art building is home to academic programmes and administrative Offices. The first seven floors house administrative functions and the top seven floors are dedicated to AKU’s newly established Faculty of Arts and Sciences and upcoming graduate schools.

“As the principal gift donor, the Kanji family has been a key supporter since the founding of AKU, knowing no bounds when opening their hearts to funding needy students and patients or sponsoring the development of world-class programmes and facilities”, said AKU’s President, Dr Sulaiman Shahabuddin’s during the plaque unveiling ceremony. The Alyshah Abdul Rehman Kanji building is a continuation of the extraordinary support that the Kanji Family has extended to the University through various generous gifts in the past. These have benefited numerous students, patients, academics, and researchers in the last four decades, and will continue to do so in the future.

The building will anchor the Faculty of Arts and Sciences (FAS), a programme that will expand the horizons of AKU making it a comprehensive university. Beginning with the first batch of 100 students this year in September, the FAS will nurture young minds to become future leaders and drive positive change by invigorating civil society, championing good governance, promoting social and economic development, fostering an appreciation for pluralism and encouraging ethical behaviour.

Symbolising AKU’s spirit of excellence in all its student-centric facilities, the FAS is situated in the Alyshah Abdul Rehman Kanji building and is all set to provide an unparalleled learning environment and experience to the next generation of leaders. Bilawal lays foundation stone of 1,200-bed heart diseases hospital

Karachi, March 21, 2023 (PPI-OT): Foreign Minister and Pakistan People’s Party Chairman Bilawal Bhutto Zardari laid the foundation stone of the 1,200-bed Zulfiqar Ali Bhutto Institute of Cardiovascular Diseases in Korangi, here on Monday. When ready the institute of cardiovascular diseases will be spread over more than 40 acres, located near the Institute of Animal Health in the Korangi area.

The ground breaking ceremony was also attended by Sindh Chief Minister Syed Murad Ali Shah, Federal Health Minister Qadir Patel, Provincial Health Minister Dr Azra Fazal Pechuho, Senator Nisar Khuhro, Executive Director of NICVD Dr Nadeem Qamar, provincial ministers, diplomats, MPAs and PPP leaders and workers. Speaking on the occasion, the Sindh chief minister apprised the PPP chairman of the salient features of the under-construction institute and of the health initiatives his government has taken so far.

Murad Ali Shah added that after the commendable achievements of NICVD in quality cardiac care and treatment of millions of Pakistanis, the new institute would be another “feather in the cap of his government”. He said that upon completion, the ZAB Institute of Cardiovascular Diseases would be the country’s largest cardiac care centre, catering to the needs of millions in Karachi and from the rest of the country. This state-of-the-art complex will comprise seven buildings, occupying a total area of 2,400,000 square feet. It will be equipped with the most advanced medical technology, he said and added that it would offer specialised cardiac medical services, including 16 major and minor operating rooms, 18 cardiac cath labs, two MRI labs, four CT labs, and a range of imaging procedures.

He said that Shaheed Benazir Bhutto had always urged her party to focus on education and health sectors. Taking her words as our mission, we have concentrated our efforts on these two sectors. and I am happy to say that our hard work is showing great results, he said. Talking about the SIUT Healthcare Model, a community-government partnership, the chief minister said that between 2018 and 2022 its large dialysis centre with 380 machines performed around 1,350 sessions daily. He added that the largest transplant centre performed 6,844 kidney transplants with life-long follow-up and medications for both donors and recipients.

He said that the centre boasts five lithotripters treating a large number of stone diseases. It also has a dedicated oncology hospital with two radiotherapy machines and PET CT facilities. He proudly pointed out that nearly 15 million people had benefited from different services in the last five years. Turning to the JPMCs Cyber knife Unit, Murad Ali Shah said that it has treated 38,000 patients and completed 18,000 radio surgeries since 2012. He added that a new surgical complex is being established there.

The chief minister said that the Gambat Institute of Medical Sciences has performed 756 liver transplants, 147 kidney transplants, 101 corneal transplants, 43 bone marrow transplants, 142 cochlear implant procedures and treated 2,446 cancer patients, besides 194,400 patients in its emergency department. Talking about the partnership with Child life Foundation, he said that his government is working with them in 95 government-run hospitals and this partnership would be extended to all the government hospitals by the end of this year. Mr Shah said that no child would be more than 30 minutes away from world-class ICU services across Sindh.

Earlier, Health Minister Dr Azra Fazal Pechuho talked about the health services being provided by the provincial government. NICVDs Executive Director Dr Nadeem Qamar gave a detailed briefing about the ZAB institute project and about the performance of the NICVD and its satellite units.

6th International Conference and Industrial Exhibition on “Camelids: Parallel social Enterprise for the Vulnerable”

Bahawalpur, March 21, 2023 (PPI-OT): Sixth two-day international conference and industrial exhibition organized by Faculty of Veterinary and Animal Sciences, Islamia University, Bahawalpur, regarding increasing the capacity of camel owners in Pakistan and producing local products from camel milk. It has started from today. This international conference is being held according to the vision of Vice Chancellor Engineer Prof. Dr. Athar Mehboob, whose aim is to make teaching and research activities in the university in accordance with the priorities of the country’s economic and social development. Similarly, the farming community should also benefit from the benefits of these research activities. Bahawalpur is located in a region where on one side there are lush green areas through irrigation and on the other side is the Cholistan desert. Both these areas are very important in terms of livestock especially camel rearing.

This conference is a link in this chain to bring together the people and the university on one platform and lead to beneficial collaboration and mutual cooperation for both. The inaugural session was presided over by Prof. Dr. Naveed Akhtar, Pro Vice Chancellor Islamia University Bahawalpur. The Pro Vice Chancellor said that Islamia University Bahawalpur is playing its role for the economic development of the country and the economic improvement of the people of this region. The conference organized by the Faculty of Veterinary and Animal Sciences will surely open new doors of development.

In the conference, Vice Chancellor University of Agriculture Dera Ismail Khan Professor Dr. Masroor Elahi Babar, Professor Dr. Subhan Qureshi from Dairy Science Park, Vice President Camel Association Pakistan Elahi Bakhsh Marghzani, Director General Livestock South Punjab Ijaz Ahmed Gursi, various regions of the country including Experts and guests from academic and research fields participated. Professor Dr. Methat Darek from the University of Konya, Turkey, made a special appearance at the conference. On this occasion, the organizer of the conference, Dean Faculty of Veterinary and Animal Sciences Prof. Dr. Khalid Mansoor said that the main objective of the conference is to bring positive change in the lives of camel people. Stalls related to the livestock sector were set up in the industrial exhibition. Cholistan camels danced the event. A large number of livestock experts, officers and students of Islamia University from across the country participated in the conference.
