Punjab University researchers’ work on air pollution acknowledged

Lahore, December 29, 2022 (PPI-OT):Punjab University Institute of Zoology’s Professor Dr Zulfiqar Ali has attended partners’ meet titled “strategies to protect the vulnerable population from air pollution exposure and impacts” for building partnership for regional collaborations among South Asian countries at ICIMOD head office at Kathmandu, Nepal.

In a briefing, Dr Ali said that in the recent decades, the Hindu Kush Himalaya (HKH) region has seen rising emissions of air pollutants from urban, industrial and rural sources. He pointed out that there was a growing concern of the deteriorating air quality affecting the visibility, changing atmosphere heating and cooling, polluting the stratosphere, depositing light absorbing substances onto snow and ice surfaces and melting of the cry sphere.

He stated that this had wide ranging impacts on human health and livelihood. He said that rapidly growing urbanization coupled with air pollution had severe consequences for large population based in the cities in the HKH region. He explained that an exploratory study was completed in three cities i.e. Lahore, Pakistan, Kathmandu, Nepal and Mandalay, Myanmar to understand the nuances relating to the impacts of air pollution at the household level for vulnerable occupation groups like drivers, street vendors, laborers and traffic wardens.

He said that the workshop brought together stakeholders working on societal and justice aspects of air pollution which has helped in fostering a collective understanding of the issues pertaining to the region and created an enabling environment to develop strategies and engagement mechanisms for action.

According to the press release, the meeting of partners started with the sharing of expectations from the collaborations to lead the path for future work in the field of air pollution research in the HKH region. The expectations can be summarized into three broad talking points as per the discussions. Collaborative research and knowledge-sharing and creation have been emphasized by most of the participants as the cornerstone of the partnership.

Working towards protecting the vulnerable population groups has been the motivation of this collaboration with social and environmental justice forming a pivotal part of this. Last but not the least, engagement in devising strategies and policies that lead to action in the entire HKH region has been envisioned by the group.

PepsiCo Supports Infrastructure at LUMS

Lahore, December 29, 2022 (PPI-OT):The Pepsi Dining Centre is getting a makeover! PepsiCo has extended its support to LUMS by agreeing to fund the redesigning and renovation of the entire dining area and upgrading it to a contemporary and practical space, aligned with the PepsiCo and LUMS brands.

To formalise the agreement, a MoU signing ceremony was held at the University on December 16, 2022. Signatories included Dr. Arshad Ahmad, Vice Chancellor, LUMS, and Mr. Abdul Latif, CEO, Lotte Akhtar Beverages Pvt. Ltd., the execution arm for the initiative. Mr. Khurram Shahzad, CFO PepsiCo was also present at the event.

Syed Babar Ali, Founding Pro Chancellor, LUMS welcomed the guests and shared anecdotes about the history of LUMS. Ms. Nuzhat Kamran, Director of Advancement, briefed the guests about the latest initiatives at LUMS and talked about the elaborate multi-disciplinary research being conducted at the University and its impact on the country.

Mr. Shahzad spoke about PepsiCo’s relationship with the University. “I treasure our strategic partnership with LUMS over the decades and this agreement is another milestone in continuing our legacy by supporting a world-class institution. The Pepsi Dining Centre is one of the most cherished spots on campus and we are excited to see our plans to embed our PEP+ sustainability vision into the new design of the facility come to life.”

The renovation entails a total revamp of the Pepsi Dining Centre (PDC) premises; the refurbished facility will serve different varieties of food and accommodate at least 660 students, a 37.5% increase in capacity.

The aim of the entire project is to have international standard recreational spaces that comfortably accommodate the growing population of the University and facilitate learning and meaningful engagement within the LUMS community.

Syed Babar Ali complimented the organisation and said, “PepsiCo is a long-standing friend of LUMS; PDC has been facilitating faculty, students, staff, alumni as well as other members of the University community over the last so many years.”

Inaugurated in 1995, the PDC was later extended in 2000 to accommodate the growing needs of the University. In 2006-08, once again, renovation of the facility took place through the support of PepsiCo, leading to an increased capacity accommodating a total of 480 students. Between 2016 and 2020, PepsiCo also donated towards the modernisation of kitchen equipment.

Dr. Ahmad also addressed the gathering and appreciated PepsiCo’s support towards LUMS. “There is an old saying that ‘the way to a man’s heart is through the stomach’; so I have to say that the way to 5,000 students’ hearts at LUMS is through the Pepsi Dining Centre.

When you think about the diversity on our campus, of course, the first thing you think about is the students’ well-being. Pepsi has a very special place in our hearts. Thank you very much for your generous support and your ongoing commitment to LUMS.”

PU UD and TC organizes seminar on Quaid-e-Azam

Lahore, December 29, 2022 (PPI-OT):Speakers at a seminar on ‘Founder of Pakistan’s Struggle and Fall of Dhaka’ said that if Quaid-e-Azam’s struggle was to be defined by one word, that word was only merit. They said that Quaid-e-Azam, raising the knowledge of merit in politics and society, taught the future generations that the development of nations was achieved only by observing merit.

The seminar was organized by Punjab University Urdu Development and Translation Centre. On this occasion, Urdu Development and Translation Centre Director Prof Dr Zahid Munir Amir, senior journalist Mr Salman Ghani, Institute of Islamic Culture Lahore Director Prof Dr Syed Mazhar Moeen, Al-Azhar University, Cairo’s Urdu Department of Egypt Dr Sabah Ali Abdul Moeez, faculty members, scholars and students from various departments were present.

In his address, Dr Zahid Munir said that if Mr Jinnah had announced to declare Urdu as the national language of Pakistan, then it was a decision according to the national and linguistic requirements of the region, calling it as a motivation of “Fall of Dhaka”, was totally unscientific and contrary to facts.

Mr Ghani said that we should learn from incidents like the tragedy of East Pakistan and move forward. He said that until the implementation of merit and complete rule of law in the country, we would not be counted among the developed nations. Dr Syed Mazhar Moin shed light on the unfair distribution of territories in the partition of India, its consequences and the political scenario after the establishment of Pakistan.

He said that on the day the tragedy of East Pakistan took place, there was mourning in our homes and till today we cannot believe that Pakistan was divided into two parts. The students paid tribute to Quaid-e-Azam by singing national songs in the ceremony. Later, Dr Zahid Munir presented gifts of books to the guests.
