Seminar on “How to achieve sustainability and ZDHC for textile industry”

Lahore, January 03, 2022 (PPI-OT): To celebrate 100 years of academic excellence of UET, A seminar on “How to achieve sustainability and ZDHC for textile industry” was successfully organized at Department of Textile Engineering, UET Lahore, Faisalabad Campus on 8th December 2021. It was one of the activities/trainings organized by the “Textile Sustainability Working Group” of the department. More than 130 representatives from textile industry and academia attended the seminar, including more than 50 representatives from textile industry.

Textile industry representative appreciated the efforts of UET textile engineering department as well as by the group. Seminar key speakers were; Dr. Shafiq Ahmad (Regional Director, BCI), Dr. Muhammad Mohsin (Chairman textile department, UET), Mr. Muhammad Abdullah (Manager, fresh water program WWF-PAK), Mr. Muhammad Ali (Senior manager, CERAD), Mr. Saad Shahid (TTI Testing Laboratories). Participation certificate and refreshment were also provided. This seminar was sponsored by WWF-Pakistan, who is also one of the founding members of “Textile Sustainability Working Group”.

SDSB Luminites Hold Reunion 2021

Lahore, January 03, 2022 (PPI-OT): As LUMS celebrates 35 years of excellence this year, its oldest cohort of alumni, those of the Suleman Dawood School of Business (SDSB) came together on campus on Saturday, December 18, 2021, for their annual reunion organised by the SDSB Luminites Association.

 

The luncheon marked the first in-person reunion for SDSB alumni in almost two years, since the onset of the pandemic, and provided them with an opportunity to celebrate their affiliation of over three decades with their alma mater. The support of technology partners such as Excellence Delivered (Pvt.) Ltd. and SAP along with Head and Shoulders helped to make the annual connect special.

 

With a turnout of 300 plus alumni, the event was well attended by members of LUMS leadership, including Syed Babar Ali, Founding Pro Chancellor, LUMS; Mr. Shahid Hussain, Rector, LUMS; Ms. Nuzhat Kamran, Director, Office of Advancement, LUMS and members of Board of Trustees namely Mr. Osman Khalid Waheed, Mr. Faisal Dawood, Mr. Furqan Ahmed Syed, Ms. Fatima Asad-Said and others industry practitioners including Mr. Wasil Amjad and Mr. Saquib Ahmed.

 

The sunny afternoon commenced with a welcome note by the President of the Alumni Association, Ms. Saad Munawar Khan (MBA 2006) who shed light on the running activities and future vision of the association. Followed by Vice President, Mr. Suneel Sarfraz Munj and General Secretary, Mr. Hassan Khan Sherwani talked about their experience and how LUMS has changed their outlook as individuals over the years.

 

On behalf of the University, Ms. Kamran then took the stage and warmly welcomed the alumni back to campus. She shared some of the University’s major undertakings and achievements from the past year, and not only thanked the alumni for their participation but also encouraged them to continue to pitch in for the long-term advancement of LUMS.

 

Dr. Syed Aun Rizvi, Associate Dean Academics, SDSB, talked about the new specialised masters programmes introduced which will equip students to become a leader in the competitive market, to design innovations suited to community needs, and to create value for their stakeholders through technology and innovation.

 

Mr. Hussain also took the stage to address the alumni and reflected on LUMS’ journey and growth over the past 35 years. He spoke of the University’s multi-faceted needs in today’s landscape and the resources now required for LUMS to maintain its excellence. “Looking at the future needs of this great institution, the University administration, the alumni, and all of the Trustees need to realign. We need to understand the needs of the University and the alumni bodies need to work in harmony with those needs,” he said.

 

In a serendipitous turn of events, Dr. Hussain’s address was followed by a surprise announcement by the Association, which became the highlight of the afternoon. On behalf of the entire SDSB Luminites Association, Mr. Shahzad Saleem (MBA 1989), a senior member of the Association’s board, announced that they have established a new fund of PKR 50 million, which will operate in perpetuity as an opportunity for interest-free loans for deserving students, and which will be supported and raised entirely by SDSB alumni in the next five years.

 

Syed Babar Ali appreciated and acknowledged the Association for this wonderful gesture of support and encouraged the alumni to keep up with this spirit of giving. “I look to you and to your successors to keep this place going. What little we could do we have done, but you have to do much more to keep this momentum going,” he said.

UVAS holds meeting on Pre-International Poultry Expo and Poultry Science Conference 2022

Lahore, January 03, 2022 (PPI-OT): The University of Veterinary and Animal Sciences Lahore in collaboration with Pakistan Poultry Association organised Pre-International Poultry Expo and Poultry Science Conference schedule to be held on 17 to 19 February 2022 at Expo Centre Lahore for the promotion of poultry sector in Pakistan.

 

Vice-Chancellor Prof Dr Nasim Ahmad and Dr Hanif Nazir Chaudhary co-chaired the meeting and reviewed preparations/arrangements for the upcoming international poultry Expo while Pro Vice-Chancellor Prof Dr Masood Rabbani, Chief organizer Conference Dr Asim Mahmood, Dr Masood Sadiq Ch, Major Jawaid Hussain Bukhari, PPA representatives and UVAS faculty members were present.

 

Speaking on the occasion, Prof Dr Nasim Ahmad suggested three modes of conference. He said that in the normal situation it should be held physically, and in case of spread of omicron through hybrid and virtually. Dr Hanif Nazir Chaudhary said that this conference will promote indigenous research and local researchers to address the poultry issues in Pakistan. He said two major aspects will be discussed during conference sessions related to poultry management and poultry health.

 

The participants suggested that various lectures and presentations by experts on clinical medicine, epidemiology, post covid-19 and climate effects on poultry health and poultry meat export during the conference. A large number of academicians from different universities, researchers, veterinarians, professionals/scientists from veterinary/animal sciences, medical sciences, public health/environmental sciences and stakeholders from poultry industries, national and international experts from different countries will attend this conference physically and also through video links.

WHO acknowledges IHHN’s Study on COVID-19 Research

Karachi, January 03, 2022 (PPI-OT): Researchers at The Indus Hospital, Korangi Campus, Karachi, conducted a cohort study during the first wave of COVID-19 from March to June 2020 in order to estimate in-hospital mortality and its determinants among COVID-19 patients. The study – published in the esteemed PLOS One medical journal in May 2021, was among the first reports on in-hospital mortality among COVID-19 patients from Pakistan. It has received acclaim and acknowledgment from the international community.

 

An exhaustive history, examination, and review of patient charts was done to record the details of the patients affected by the deadly virus. The results of this study were expected to guide local physicians in identifying high-risk patients and guide their management. The study described patient demographics, clinical and laboratory features, and response to therapeutic strategies. Final outcomes were also reported, including in-hospital mortality.

 

The study was recognized by the World Health Organization (WHO), who inducted the IHHN research data as part of their database for the WHO Global Clinical Platform for COVID-19. The platform serves in the global effort to collect clinical data relating to suspected or confirmed cases of COVID-19 and contribute data to the WHO Global Clinical Platform.

 

The platform has contributors from across the globe, with member states, health facilities, and other organizations participating in the global effort to collect anonymized clinical data of COVID-19 to the WHO Global Clinical Platform.

 

The team from IHHN was composed of Dr. Samreen Sarfaraz, Dr. Quratulain Shaikh, Dr. Syed Ghazanfar Saleem, Dr. Anum Rahim, Dr. Fivzia Farooq Herekar, Dr. Samina Junejo, and Dr. Aneela Hussain. The Indus Hospital Research Center facilitated the research project throughout and assisted in collaborating with WHO for data sharing.
