Highlights of 1st International Virtual Summit on Medical Sociology and Public Health 

Rawalpindi, December 07, 2021 (PPI-OT):The Department of Sociology at Fatima Jinnah Women University has organized 1st International Health Virtual Summit on Medical Sociology and Public Health in collaboration with Huston-Tillitson University USA, partnership by Sustainable social Development Organization (SSDO), The FEEEL and DiriTalnets.

The opening ceremony was held at Fatima Jinnah Women University on Dec 02, 2021 while the closing ceremony was virtual on Dec 04, 2021. Three days virtual summit ascertaining the sociological interrelations between health, illness and medicine aims to bring together leading medical sociologists, sociologists, social workers, policy makers, healthcare professionals, social science researchers, and academicians, to exchange and share their experiences and research results about all aspects of medical sociology and public health keeping in mind the current pandemic of COVID-19 and healthcare practices in the new normal.

Dr. Saima Hamid, worthy vice-chancellor of Fatima Jinnah Women University in her address said with cream of the cream of national and international speakers from all around the world, it is the privilege of Fatima Jinnah Women University to host this conference in the admit of a pandemic. In this pandemic, we have achieved a huge milestone even the academia has contributed a lot to it. In a matter of fact, 500 vaccines that have been disposed of by university in the past four months needs to be noted as well, we transitioned into online teaching, though people thought it wouldn’t be possible we made it possible through collective efforts. This pandemic despite all the chaos has bought many opportunities for us to move forward and use modern technology effectively. She hopes that many issues will be discussed and various policies, directions and research priorities will emerge as a result of this three-day virtual summit.

Dr. Adeela Rehman as Convener of the summit elaborated the aim of the summit to highlight the between Medical Sociology and Public Health in effective evidence-based education programs and health promotion practices. She mentioned that during 3-days summit, 4 Plenary Session and 10 Parallel scientific session were conducted in which 66 papers were presented from across the world on various aspects of Medical Sociology and Public Health. (66 papers). Moreover, 25 international speakers from 10 countries including USA, UK, Malaysia, Indonesia, India, South Africa, France, Spain, Canada, and Bangladesh have presented in different sessions as key note speakers.

More than 600 participants had attend the conference including national and international students, professionals, academician, researchers and policy makers. As a policy recommendations derived from the summit, she mentioned affordable, efficient and equitable Integrating system of healthcare is required to be highlighted in health policy. Furthermore, she emphasized that an interdisciplinary public health discipline is also the need of a time to be established in leading higher education institution to promote public health perspectives as well as to produce more public health professionals.

Interdisciplinary research studies should be conducted to explore and promote the holistic perspective of health and illness. The 3-days summit was successfully ended with the vote of thanks by Ms. Hina Arooj to all the partner organizations, participants, students and faculty members who took part in organizing the event.

CEE equips dedicated visionaries with the expertise, skills, and resources to develop multisector approaches and build healthy and engaged communities in over 100 countries.

Eligibility Requirements

Competition for the CEE Program is merit-based and open to emerging civil society and community leaders who meet the criteria below. Applications that do not meet these eligibility requirements will be disqualified and will not be reviewed by the selection committee.

You are between the ages of 21-28 at the time of application

You are a citizen of one of the eligible countries listed below

You have a minimum of two years of professional or volunteer experience at the time of application

You are living and working in your home country

Individuals with refugee status working on behalf of their home community may be given special consideration

You are working on a community engagement initiative in your home country, either in a professional or volunteer capacity, with a vision to pursue a career working to support civil society

You have a high level of proficiency in spoken and written English at the time of application

Semi-finalists will be required to take or submit recent scores for a TOEFL or IELTS English language test

You are available to travel to the U.S. for three months

You are committed to returning to your home country to complete a Community Engagement Project (CEP)

You are not a citizen or permanent resident of the U.S. and have not applied for U.S. permanent residency within the past three years

You are eligible to receive a U.S. J-1 visa

Applicants who have participated in an exchange program sponsored by the U.S. Government must have fulfilled their two-year home residency requirement by the time of application

You are committed to returning to your home country for a minimum of two years after completing the program and

You are not a current IREX employee or consultant, or their immediate family member

Department of English Organizes a Memorial for Dr. Kamal ud Din and Ms. Ayesha Pervaiz 

Lahore, December 07, 2021 (PPI-OT):The Department of English organized a Memorial for Dr. Kamal ud Din and Ms. Ayesha Pervaiz on 2nd December 2021. The occasion was graced by FCCU Rector, Dr. Jonathon Addleton; Vice Rector for Academic Affairs; Dr. Douglas Trimble; Associate Vice Rector for Faculty Affairs, Dr. Sufian Aslam; Associate Vice Rector for Academic Affairs, Dr. Gloria Calib; Professor Emeritus of Inorganic and Analytical Chemistry, Dr. Christi Munir and Professor and Dean of Humanities, Dr. Altaf Ullah Khan. The family of Dr. Kamal had been requested to join and share their grief. The members of English department also shared their heartfelt sentiments and expressed their grief.

In their address, the Rector and Vice Rector talked about the irreparable loss caused by the death of both the faculty members. The Dean and the Chairperson talked about the intellectual as well as the emotional void created due to this loss. Dr. Waseem Anwar’s poem titled “Trace” was recited and his video message about Dr. Kamal was played. Dr. Shahida Dilawar attended the Memorial to express her feelings in poetic form. The Memorial ended at presenting a bouquet to Mrs. Kamal and thanking her to allow the department of English to share their grief.

QA Awareness Seminars for the Students of MS and HSS 

Karachi, December 07, 2021 (PPI-OT):As per QEC’s practice at DSU, a series of interactive quality assurance awareness seminars was conducted for the students of Management Sciences, Humanities and Social Sciences. The seminars, conducted by Ms. Fatima Kiran (QEC Coordinator, MS and HSS), focused on HEC’s self-assessment criteria, ranking criteria and maximum scores for each criterion, self-assessment of programs, feedback and survey forms, and outcomes of assessment. Q and A sessions were held at the end of each seminar to answer the queries of students.

Dr. Muhammad Zahir Iqbal, Associate Professor, FES has been awarded the Pakistan Academy of Sciences Gold Medal for the year 2020 

Swabi, December 07, 2021 (PPI-OT):Dr. Muhammad Zahir Iqbal, Associate Professor, Faculty of Engineering Sciences of the GIK Institute has been awarded the Pakistan Academy of Sciences (PAS) Gold Medal for the year 2020. The award is conferred on him for his outstanding research performance in Engineering Sciences. Dr. Iqbal’s notable research efforts have been considered as the most valuable contribution to the development of engineering sciences and technology.

It is worth mentioning that Dr. Iqbal holds the national Outstanding Research Award by HEC for the year 2017, in the Best Research Paper category in the Natural Sciences discipline. In addition, Dr. Iqbal has been awarded the prestigious GIK Annual Research Award for the year 2016, 2017, 2018, and 2019. Furthermore, he has been awarded various research grants such as NRPU-HEC, LCF-HEC, PSF-NSFC worth 84 million.

Office of Research Innovation and Commercialization Holds a One Week Long Workshop on Ubuntu and Python

Islamabad, December 07, 2021 (PPI-OT):Python is a high-level, interpreted and general-purpose dynamic programming language that focuses on code readability. Python ranks among the most popular and fastest-growing languages in the world, as it is powerful, flexible, and easy-to-use. It is used in many organizations as it supports multiple programming paradigms and also performs automatic memory management.

Office of Research, Innovation and Commercialization (ORIC) organized One Week Hands-on Course on “Ubuntu and Python” starting from 22nd November 2021. The purpose of the course was to equip participants with the applied knowledge about Ubuntu and Python with practical illustrations.

The course contents included the key topics like: Ubuntu and Python Basics, Ubuntu Bash Scripts, Python Environment, Pandas, Deep Learning, Dataset Processing and Classification and Convolutional Neural Network. The participants included CUST students and personnel from National Center for Physics (NCP). The concluding ceremony was graced by Dean Research and Innovation, Prof. Aamer Iqbal Bhatti. The session ended with acknowledging remarks, and significance of Python and relevant certifications by Dean Research and Innovation. He also appreciated and endorsed the efforts of ORIC for successfully conducting the course.
