Ambassador Platform “Pakistan and the US; Next Steps in Relationship”

Islamabad, October 15, 2021 (PPI-OT):The Centre for Strategic Perspectives (CSP) at the Institute of Strategic Studies Islamabad (ISSI), organized a web talk under its Ambassadors’ Platform titled, “Pakistan and the US; Next Steps in Relationship.” The speaker at the talk was Pakistan’s Ambassador to the US, Dr. Asad Majeed Khan. Following the Ambassador’s talk, Dr. Rifaat Hussain, Professor of Public Policy, National University of Sciences and Technology, Islamabad and Dr. Rabia Akhtar, Director Centre for Security, Strategy and Policy Research at the University of Lahore offered their reflections as discussants. The talk was moderated by Director General ISSI, Ambassador Aizaz Ahmad Chaudhry.

Dr Neelum Nigar, Director CSP in her opening remarks stated that the withdrawal of US troops from Afghanistan provides an important opportunity for Pakistan to reassess its relations with the US in light of shared interests and shared priorities. Ambassador Khan while shedding light on the state of affairs of Pakistan-US relations stated that the events of the past few decades have essentially made Pakistan-US relations a security centric relationship. He was of the view that the Biden administration inherited a lot of unprecedented issues and problems including the decision to withdraw from Afghanistan.

The collapse of the Afghan National Army came as a surprise for the US. This has also given rise to internal finger-pointing in the US generating a sentiment of reflection and introspection. While talking about Pakistan-US relations Ambassador Khan opined that Afghanistan will remain the primary and principal subject of conversation between the two capitals. Over the years, Pakistan has reduced its dependence on the economic and military assistance that the US once provided; Pakistan has been on the giving end in the context of providing and facilitating the peace process.

While talking about the official mood in the US, Ambassador Khan stated that the conversations between the two countries remain cordial, however there are two additional stress points on the relationship; US-China escalation and US-India strategic partnership. Concluding his remarks Ambassador Khan said that the bilateral interactions between the two capitals are gaining momentum on multiple tracks including climate change and clean energy.

Dr. Rifaat Hussain while making his remarks stated that Afghanistan will remain the main driver for the conversations between the two capitals. He raised caution on the current Indian mindset and attitude that encourages fighting war on two fronts and questioned the stalemate that is present at the highest level of the leadership. He was of the view that there is tremendous ambiguity that exists in the US Congress as well as in the Pentagon about the kind of relationship the US wants with Pakistan.

Dr. Rabia Akhtar in her remarks stated that today Pakistan is free of tags with regards to its relationship with the US with the breaking of the Af-Pak prism and the Indo-Pak dehyphenation. She was of the view that Pakistan’s identity for the first time is not help up by any tag and this opportunity should be used to craft an independent foreign policy with a focus on regional connectivity, completion of CPEC projects, as well as building back its economy. Ambassador Aizaz Chaudhry summed up the discussions and concluded the meeting with a vote of thanks to Ambassador Asad Majeed Khan.

Previous governments obstructed the development of Rescue-1122, it is a pity that the current government also ignored it: Ch Parvez Elahi

Lahore, October 15, 2021 (PPI-OT):Acting Governor Punjab Chaudhry Parvez Elahi while addressing a function held on the 17th anniversary of Rescue 1122 Service said that his relationship with Rescue Service and Rescuers is not about politics but about the heart, when the heart stops beating, the rest of the body does not work. He said that he would personally talk to the CM Punjab to restore the Rescue 1122 allowance which was abolished by the previous government.

Ch Parvez Elahi said that previous governments had obstructed the development of Rescue 1122, but despite all opposition, previous governments could not abolish this institution, it is a pity that the present government also ignored this institution. Ch Parvez Elahi said that 17 years ago I also faced a similar emergency on which I felt helpless and thought of creating a service in Pakistan that would serve humanity beyond politics on which the whole nation today is proud of.

The academy we set up for the professional training of Punjab rescuers not only trained more than 20,000 emergency professionals across the country but also the Pakistan Rescue Team of the Emergency Services Academy to become the first certified disaster response team from the United Nations in South Asia which is also a place of honour and pride for every Pakistani. Today I would like to congratulate the Pakistan Rescue Team and each and every member of the United Nations on receiving certification from the United Nations.

He said that the Emergency Services Amendment Act 2021 was passed to solve the problems of the rescue service which helped in fulfilling the long standing desire of the rescuers for a service structure. He said that the Act would be amended to provide the same facilities to the martyrs of Rescue 1122 as would be provided to the martyrs of the Army.

He said that the seed which I had sown for humanitarian service in the form of Rescue 1122 in October 2004 has now become a fertile tree and not only Punjab but also other provinces are benefiting from its shade. The Punjab Emergency Service Act was passed unanimously by the Punjab Assembly. “After the success of the Lahore Rescue Service, we have expanded its reach to all major cities,” he said.

Whenever I see any emergency vehicle of Rescue 1122, my heart feels calm and contented. I thank Allah Almighty a thousand times that Allah has made me do this work. There are thousands of people in my circle of influence who appreciate the performance of the rescue service and their timely arrival. Ch Parvez Elahi said that Alhamdulillah Rescue Service has so far rescued more than 9.9 million emergency victims and the Fire Rescue Service has saved the losses of over Rs. 511 billion with their timely response and professional firefighting skills.

On this occasion, Dr. Rizwan Naseer, Director General, Punjab Emergency Services, thanked Ch Parvez Elahi and said that he has tried his best to fulfill the responsibility entrusted to him by the people 17 years ago. Chaudhry Parvez Elahi as Speaker and Secretary Muhammad Khan Bhatti played an important role in passing service structure act to Rescue 1122, for which all Rescue 1122 personnel pay homage to him. Secretary Punjab Assembly Muhammad Khan Bhatti, DG Parliamentary Affairs Inayatullah Luk, GM Sikandar, former Secretary Health Sohail Ahmed and others also attended the function.

Dubai, October 15, 2021 (PPI-OT):Cricket and sports fans across the world will be able to enjoy unparalleled coverage of the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2021, when the tournament returns after five years on Sunday, 17 October.

The pinnacle of the shortest format of cricket offers explosive cricket and entertainment for everyone and features cricket’s biggest names and best teams. The event, the biggest ever to be staged in the UAE and Oman, begins Sunday in Muscat and finishes with the final in Dubai on 14 November.

ICC TV will produce live coverage of all the matches in the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2021, and a full world feed service for licensees including a pre-match show, an innings interval fill and a post-match wrap-up.

The stellar commentary line-up includes the last captain to hold aloft the Men’s T20 World Cup trophy, Daren Sammy, who will be joined by former South Africa paceman Dale Steyn, Player of the Tournament of the 2012 edition Shane Watson, and a host of other experienced broadcasters like Nasser Hussain, Harsha Bhogle, Ian Bishop, Natalie Germanos, Sunil Gavaskar, Michael Atherton and Simon Doull, Russel Arnold, Anjum Chopra, Murali Kartik, Athar Ali Khan, Bazid Khan, Mpumelelo Mbangwa, Preston Mommsen, Danny Morrison, Mark Nicholas, Niall O’Brien and Alan Wilkins.

Commenting on the game and how it has evolved, former defending captain Darren Sammy said: “Twenty20 cricket provides maximum thrills to fans and it’s no wonder that it is considered to be the vehicle for the growth of the game worldwide. Believe me, there are no easy games in this tournament and it has been nothing less than a dream for me to lift the trophy twice for my team. I still back the West Indies to defend their title but I really wish all the teams the very best. It will be a great pleasure being in the commentary box this time.”

Dale Steyn added: “It’s an honour to be part of the commentary team at the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup and a pleasure to be watching all the action from close quarters. The game has changed a lot in recent times and there is some really exciting talent out there waiting to make its mark. I am sure there are lots of explosive performances and close finishes in store. I can’t really pick a team to win it yet, and that is what makes the tournament all that more exciting – all the unpredictability, along with the anticipation.”

Speaking ahead of the tournament, Nasser Hussain said: “This is going to be a massive tournament with the world’s top players in action in the fastest evolving format of the international game. Not only do we get to see the leading teams, but we also get a chance to see the emerging teams fancying their chances in the T20 format. I can’t wait for the tournament to begin and I’ll enjoy working on these mouth-watering contests.”

Ian Bishop added: “It seems unfathomable that five and a half years have passed since the last edition in 2016. In that time, the format has developed, and grown exponentially. The power hitting of modern the batter, the mystique and skills of the spinners, the pace and variations of some of the fastest and best fast bowlers in addition to the dynamic athleticism of fielders, promise to make this the most exciting and entertaining edition of the Men’s T20 World Cup yet. Each competing nation has invested heavily in enhancing their team’s resources in preparation for their attempt to be crowned “world champions”. I am thrilled and honoured to be a part of a diverse and dynamic commentary team covering and conveying the many narratives of this auspicious global event. We all remain mindful of the damage wrought in the ongoing fight against the global pandemic. As such, we endeavour to communicate to you all the joy, beauty and healing that cricket can deliver to every nation.”
