Formula Electric Racing NUST secures second position in Formula Student Russia 21

Islamabad, September 27, 2021 (PPI-OT):Congratulations to Formula Electric Racing – NUST, a student Team of Pakistan Navy Engineering College (PNEC), Karachi, as it scored the first-ever Podium for Pakistan in any Formula Student Competition. The team was also second in all individual events of the competition which includes the Engineering Design event, Business Plan Presentation and Cost and Manufacturing Event.

They managed to overcome immense odds stacked against them. The Business Plan event consisted of a Business Plan Presentation Video (BPPV) which was followed by a Business Plan Presentation. BPPV is a 30s pitch video while BPP is a ten-minute presentation based on a Deep Dive Topic provided by the judges of the event. The Deep dive topic for this year was to make a business model for large scale production of EV prototypes that would cater for the plan of zero carbon footprint facility in the model in the span of ten years.

The Engineering Design Event consisted of multiple presentations and sessions with judges where the vehicle’s design and dynamics were accessed. A full vehicle appearance video was also submitted to the judges whereas the Cost and Manufacturing Event at Formula Student competition aims to judge the Team’s understanding of its vehicle’s cost. Teams are judged based on buying decisions and long-term investments, as well as manufacturing, quality and environmental sustainability of their decisions.

After the team Formula Electric Racing-NUST’s recent successful run in Formula Student UK 2021, the team decided to extend its legacy and leave a mark at the Formula Student Russia 21 (FSR). FSR is an international Formula Student Engineering Competition where different teams from around the world participate to showcase their Formula Student Vehicle Prototype. Now, the team has started preparation for the next season of Formula Student Competitions, and the entire NUST family wishes them the best of luck. You’ve made us very proud!

DWP Group reaffirms its Support to the National Outreach Programme 

Lahore, September 27, 2021 (PPI-OT):An acknowledgement ceremony in honour of the DWP Group’s support of the National Outreach Programme (NOP) at LUMS was held on September 22, 2021. In attendance were senior management of DWP Group including Chairman and CEO, Mr. Farooq Naseem, Mrs. Roohi Farooq Naseem, Mr. Imtiaz Pervez, Mr. Arshad Nasir and Mr. Sabah-ud-din Rana. Members of the LUMS senior management at the event included Founding Pro Chancellor Syed Babar Ali; Rector, Mr. Shahid Hussain; Vice Chancellor, Dr. Arshad Ahmad; Provost, Dr. Farhat Haq; Director Advancement, Ms. Nuzhat Kamran and members of the Development Team.

DWP Group is a leading technology company in Pakistan with core businesses in home appliances, HVAC and ICT industries. Their partnership with LUMS started in 2017, and so far, 29 scholars have benefitted from the scholarship fund set up by the organisation. Next year, another 20 scholars will graduate.

At the interactive session organised between the higher management of DWP Group and the scholarship recipients. Mr. Naseem advised the students, “There is only one way to success – focus on your education. Your initial hard work opened the doors to LUMS for you, and your job is to keep working hard to open more doors. While we are honoured to get the chance to support you, your rigorous pursuit of merit is a greater responsibility. Our objective is to support you through this journey so that one day, you are able to make a difference the same way we have.”

Syed Babar Ali commended Mr. Naseem’s zeal to give back to society. “Thank you for your generosity and for doing everything that you have done for LUMS. We need the support of donors such as yourself to take our mission forward,” he said.

Mr. Shahid Hussain spoke about his association with DWP. “I’ve known Farooq Sahib for a few years and I am sure that the kind of research you’ll be sponsoring within the Syed Babar Ali School of Science and Engineering (SBASSE) will reflect the same values embodied by you and the DWP Group. Merit is at the core of every step we’ve undertaken at LUMS, starting from the selection of students to the hiring and promotion of world-class faculty members. Your support is highly appreciated by all of us at LUMS,” he said.

Dr. Arshad Ahmad also spoke about the long-term association of LUMS with the DWP Group and said, “While there are many organisations out there that are worthy of support, you have chosen to give to LUMS for which we are grateful. You have provided the University with a bridge for both accessibility and diversity. The only way we can support more scholars at LUMS as well as build a cohort of world-class faculty members is to build partnerships with the industry and organisations such as the DWP Group.”

The ceremony included a presentation about LUMS by Ms. Kamran, and a short video of scholars funded by DWP. The gathering was also briefed about the research initiatives being undertaken in the field of electrical engineering by Dr. Muhammad Awais Bin Altaf, Assistant Professor at SBASSE. DWP Group’s CSR arm, the DWP Foundation currently has a portfolio comprising the healthcare and education sectors and their investments in these areas have crossed PKR 500 million. The DWP Group has replicated similar scholar sponsorships at IBA Karachi, NUST and IBA Sukkur.

September 25 observed as the “National Newspaper Readership Day” in Pakistan 

Karachi, September 27, 2021 (PPI-OT):September 25 was observed as the “National Newspaper Readership Day” in Pakistan. On the occasion, the newspapers published special supplement to urge the people to read newspapers. The supplement covered message of the President, Prime Minister, Provincial Governors, and Chief Ministers as well as the Federal Minister for Information. Pakistan Post issued a special stamp to commemorate the occasion.

In his message President, Dr. Arif Alvi, stated that we need to encourage and educate our people about developing reading habits as it will contribute greatly towards the intellectual development of the nation. He said that reading played a significant role in his daily routines and it was almost at the top of his pleasures in life. He appreciated the efforts of APNS for celebrating “National Newspaper Readership Day” and congratulated them for spearheading the cause.

Prime Minister Imran Khan, in his message appreciated the efforts of APNS on behalf of the Government of Pakistan for observing the “National Newspaper Readership Day” in order to acquaint the nation about the significance of newspaper reading. He opined that newspapers are a source of reliable and authentic information in an era of massive proliferation of fake news. He stated that it was encouraging to see that newspaper have upheld their authenticity and reliability despite advent of digital media.

He also commended the newspapers and media for its role in aiding the government to combat COVID-19 pandemic. He further stated that newspapers have also helped in putting Pakistan’s stance across the globe. He reiterated his government’s resolve to promote freedom of expression and urged the newspapers to join hands with government to develop an educated and enlightened nation.

The Governors of all four provinces, Chief Ministers and the Federal Information Minister also commended the APNS for its role in promoting newspaper readership across Pakistan and providing reliable and authentic news to readers. September 25, was dedicated by APNS in 2019 as “National Newspaper Readership Day”. The significance of this date is that on this day world’s first multipage daily newspaper “Public Occurrences” was published in 1689 from the U.S.

The APNS thanked the Pakistan Post for issuing the commemorative stamp and urged the public not only to use this stamp but also to inculcate the habit of reading amongst their children. The best way to encourage your children to read is to start them from newspapers, the APNS added. The APNS also ran an advertising campaign to mark the occasion.

Central Punjab and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa fined for maintaining slow over-rate 

Rawalpindi, September 27, 2021 (PPI-OT):Central Punjab and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa have been fined PKR 40,000 and PKR 25,000, respectively for maintaining a slow over-rate in the ongoing National T20.

Central Punjab were three overs short in the match against Khyber Pakhtunkhwa on Sunday at the Pindi Cricket Stadium, while Khyber Pakhtunkhwa were two overs short of their target in their match against Southern Punjab on Saturday.

Both teams were charged under Article 2.22 of the PCB Code of Conduct for Players and Players Support Personnel that deals with minimum over-rate offences.

Central Punjab captain Babar Azam pleaded guilty to the charge proposed by on-field umpires Ahmed Shahab and Aftab Gillani and accepted the sanction leveled by match referee Iqbal Sheikh.

Khyber Pakhtunkhwa captain Mohammad Rizwan pleaded guilty to the charge proposed by on-field umpires Ahmed Shahab and Imran Jawed and accepted the sanction leveled by match referee Iqbal Sheikh.

In two separate incidents, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa’s Shaheen Shah and Southern Punjab’s Azam Khan have been fined 40 per cent and 25 per cent of their match-fees, respectively for breaching the PCB Code of Conduct for Players and Players Support Personnel during their teams matches against Southern Punjab and Balochistan, respectively in the National T20 at Pindi Cricket Stadium.

Both players were found to have violated Article 2.8 of the PCB Code of Conduct (Level 1), which reads as: “Showing dissent at an Umpire’s decision during a Match.”

Azam and Shaheen pleaded guilty to the charges. Azam accepted the sanction proposed by on-field umpires Ghaffar Kazmi and Imran Jawed and leveled by match referee Nadeem Arshad.

Approximately 2 in 5 Pakistanis (41%) claim that the incidences of burglary and unrest in their neighbourhood have decreased: Gallup and Gilani Pakistan 

Islamabad, September 27, 2021 (PPI-OT):According to a survey conducted by Gallup and Gilani Pakistan, nearly 2 in 5 Pakistanis (41%) claim that the incidences of burglary and unrest in their neighbourhood have decreased.

A nationally representative sample of adult men and women from across the four provinces was asked the following question, “Over the past year, have the incidences of burglary and unrest in your neighbourhood / area increased, decreased or stayed the same?” In response to this question, 31% said it increased, 41% said it decreased while 26% said it stayed the same. 2% did not know or did not respond.

Punjab Baseball Team Trials held in Renala Khurd

Lahore, September 27, 2021 (PPI-OT): Trials of Punjab Baseball Team for participation in 24th National Baseball Championship were organized at Renala Degree College, Renala Khurd. Secretary General Punjab Baseball Association Miss Humaira Mughal while talking said that the 24th National Men’s Baseball Championship is being played in Rawalpindi from October 11-17, 2021. Apart from the four provinces, teams from Islamabad, Gilgit-Baltistan, Army, WAPDA, Police, HEC and Railways will participate in the event.

For the selection of the Punjab Baseball Team, trials of players were organized under the supervision of Punjab Baseball Association at Renala Degree College, Renala Khurd. Athletes from different parts of Punjab participated in the trials. Tariq Nadeem (International Baseball Player) and Nadeem Sajjad Shah (Coach Bahria Baseball Academy) conducted trials of the players and selected 31 players for the training camp of the Punjab Baseball Team.

According to Miss Humaira Mughal, the Chief Guest on the occasion of trials was Syed Fakhr Ali Shah, President Pakistan Federation Baseball. He was accompanied by Punjab Baseball Association President Muhammad Hamood Lakhvi (Principal Renala Degree College), Vice President Jamil Kamran (Multan) and Bilal Mustafa (Member at Large). Apart from them, Pakistan Baseball Team Coach Basit Murtaza, Saleem Haider (International Baseball Player), Usman Shaukat (International Baseball Player), Imran Majeed Khan (Member Pakistan Federation Baseball) and Fakhr Amir Kazmi (Legal Advisor Federation) were also present.

Miss Humaira Mughal further said that the players who have been selected include Muhammad Naeem, Hussain, Aqeel Abbas, Huzaima, Muhammad Hamza and Syed Mohib from Faisalabad Division, Ahmed Faraz, Ghulam Murtaza, Ali Shah, Muhammad Shah, Wali Atiq, Afraz Hashmi, Aftab, Ahsan and Mubashir Khalil from Lahore Division, Asad Asif, Talha Abid, Abdul Rauf and Umar from Multan Division, Muhammad Yahya from Gujranwala Division, Shiraz Fida, Wasim Zubair, Muhammad Zahid and Bilal Rasool from Bahawalpur Division, Bilal Ahmed from Rawalpindi Division, Rashid Kaleem, Ali Haider, Faisal Nadeem, Hamza Amin, Talha Mujahid and Umar Nadeem from Sahiwal Division. The camp of the Punjab baseball team will be held in Renala Khurd from October 1.

The President of the Punjab Baseball Association Muhammad Hamood Lakhvi said on the occasion that the coaches have selected the best players in the trials and hoped that proper training of these players would help us in preparing a better team. He also thanked the federation for its support for the trials.
