UVAS holds 3-day faculty development workshop on Knowing Cancer in Small Animals to Improve their Quality of Life

Lahore, July 12, 2021 (PPI-OT):The Institute of Biochemistry and Biotechnology (IBBT), Department of Pathology and Collage of Veterinary Animal Sciences (CVAS) Jhang Campus of the University of Veterinary and Animal Sciences (UVAS) Lahore in collaboration with Pakistan Veterinary Medical Council (PVMC) jointly arranged a three-days faculty development workshop on ‘Knowing Cancer in Small Animal to Improve Their Quality of Life’ here at City Campus Lahore.

Federal Joint Secretary Ministry of Inter-provincial Coordination Mr Usman Sarosh and Vice- Chancellor Prof Dr Nasim Ahmad co-chaired the concluding session of the workshop and they distributed certificates among participants and resource persons while UVAS Pro Vice- Chancellor/President (PVMC) Prof Dr Masood Rabbani, President Pakistan Veterinary Medical Association Dr Muhammad Arshad, Vice-President (PVMC) Dr Nazeer Hussain Kalhoro, Chairman Department of Pathology Prof Dr Asim Aslam, Director (IBBT) Prof Dr Waseem Shahzad, Associate Prof Dr Muhammad Waseem, Dr Sehrish Firyal and number of faculty members and professionals from different institutions of Pakistan were present.

Speaking on the occasion, Mr Usman Sarosh lauded the organizer of the workshop UVAS and PVMC to arrange this workshop on informative topic which was the key way of learning innovative knowledge for young veterinarian. Prof Dr Nasim Ahmad urged the participants of training to learn about practical knowledge and techniques for the enhancement of professional competencies. The objectives of the training were to impart better understanding of the latest trends in animal cancers to the training participants, to update them on the latest molecular and histopathological tools for cancer pathogenesis and also to promote the awareness and importance of animal cancers in our society.

During three day workshop national and international experts delivered lectures on the topics of cancer overview with regard to small animals, cancer pathogenesis and cell cycle, canine cancer classification and diagnostic techniques, cancer mitigation using local herbs, biopsy trimming/tumor margins, tissue preservation and processing, histopathology of normal tissues of companion animals in Pakistan, common cancers in companion animals and gene expression analysis of canine cancer by RT-qPCR, etc.

GCU selection board recommends appointment of 18 lecturers

Lahore, July 12, 2021 (PPI-OT):The 80th Selection Board of Government College University Lahore has recommended the appointment of 18 lecturers in seven departments and promotions of 13 faculty and staff members of the university. Vice-Chancellor Prof. Dr Asghar Zaidi chaired the meetings of the Selection Board which were attended by subject experts, representatives of the Syndicate and other permanent members. The Selection Board recommended the appointment of lecturers in Chemistry, Microbiology, Botany, Economics, Geography, Computer Science, English Literature and Sociology. The Selection Board also interviewed candidates for the post of Lecturer in Geography but didn’t find any suitable candidate to recommend for appointment.

The Selection Board also recommended the promotion of seven faculty members on the tenure track system, and promotion cases as Deputy Registrar, Senior Librarian, System Analyst and Deputy Controller of Examination are recommended. The recommendations of the Selection Board would be placed before the University’s Syndicate for approval.

Vice-Chancellor Prof. Dr Asghar Zaidi said from advertisement to scrutiny and written tests to interviews, 100 percent merit and transparency was being ensured in all appointments. Prof. Zaidi said these regular appointments would help improve teacher student ratio and the availability of PhD qualified staff. “Further, the regular appointments would also provide better incentives for the teachers,” he concluded.

Pakistan red crescent society recognizes IHHN for its efforts during the covid-19 pandemic

Karachi, July 12, 2021 (PPI-OT):Adding another feather in its cap, the Indus Hospital and Health Network (IHHN) was recognized by the Pakistan Red Crescent Society for its efforts during the COVID-19 pandemic at an event held on July 7, 2021. IHHN was the recipient of the “Commendation Award” for its work as a frontline organization during the COVID-19 pandemic.

“Today, we all would like to pay tribute to all these staff members and volunteers for performing commendable work during the COVID-19 emergency,” Shahnaz Hamid, Chairman, Pakistan Red Crescent Society, said during the event. “Together we are unstoppable is the theme of World Red Cross/Red Crescent Day 2021, and today I believe that by working together, we can help the most deserving and vulnerable people of our society.”

Dr. Ghazanfar Saleem, Chair, Emergency Services at The Indus Hospital, accepted the award on behalf of the Network and thanked the Pakistan Red Crescent Society for their recognition and appreciation of the IHHN’s efforts in combatting the pandemic. In 2020, the Network set up a respiratory emergency room, a designated COVID-19 Unit setup at its hospitals, physiotherapy sessions for post-COVID-19 patients, a COVID-19 clinic with dialysis facility as well as a COVID-19 labor room and operation theatre for COVID-19 positive moms.

In addition, IHHN established a COVID-19 unit in Badin and Muzaffargarh under the Public-Private Partnership with the governments of Sindh and Punjab. The Network also helped the Sindh Government to set up two hospitals at Dumba Goth and Gadap Town. Moreover, a 26-bed facility was set up at the Korangi Campus, while the Emergency Department of the hospital was designated for the screening and treatment of COVID-19 patients.

PCB renews charity partnership with Shahid Afridi Foundation 

Lahore, July 12, 2021 (PPI-OT):The Pakistan Cricket Board today renewed Corporate Social Responsibility partnership with Shahid Afridi Foundation (SAF) for an additional two years, SAF will continue to be the PCB’s charity partner for the next two years. Earlier, the PCB had signed a two-year MoU with SAF in 2019.

The partnership with SAF will cover non-ICC events, meaning as in the past, SAF logo will feature prominently on the Pakistan national men’s cricket team’s playing kits. PCB’s other CSR initiatives include partnership with British Asian Trust to create mental health awareness and with Pakistan Polio Eradication Programme for polio eradication.

The SAF was founded in 2014 with a view of improving living conditions of poor and destitute members of the society. SAF is working in the areas of Health, Education and Clean water together with the message of global peace and goodwill via sports diplomacy. SAF aims to see Pakistani people prosper, educated and healthy in the coming years.

Eggplant (7%), ladyfinger (5%) and bitter gourd (Karela) (5%) are among the least favourite vegetables of Pakistanis: Gallup and Gilani Pakistan 

Islamabad, July 12, 2021 (PPI-OT):According to a survey conducted by Gallup and Gilani Pakistan, 7% cite eggplant as their least favourite vegetable.

A nationally representative sample of adult men and women from across the four provinces was asked the following question, “Please tell us, and is there any vegetable that is you’re least favourite?” In response to this question, 7% said ‘eggplant/brinjal’, 5% said ‘okra/ladyfinger’, 5% said ‘bitter gourd (karela)’, 3% said ‘pumpkin’, 3% said ‘round gourd/tinday’, 2% said ‘cauliflower’, 2% said ‘turnip’, 1% said ‘potato’, 1% said ‘taro (arvi)’, 1% said ‘spinach’ and 1% said ‘capsicum/bell pepper’.
