Islamabad, August 21, 2023 (PPI-OT): According to a survey conducted by Gallup and Gilani Pakistan, when it comes to same family marriages in Pakistan, 74% married their first cousins. This was highest in the province of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa at 85%.

A nationally representative sample of adult men and women with marriages within the family, from across the country, was asked the question “Please tell me if your marriage is/was with your first cousin, i.e., paternal/maternal uncle or aunt’s child, or second cousin, i.e., parent’s cousin’s child?” In response, 74% said first cousin, 23% said second cousin, and 3% gave no response.
