Urgent Call for International Aid as Pakistan Faces Severe Flood Crisis

Karachi: Chairman Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) Bilawal Bhutto Zardari has urgently appealed for international assistance to alleviate the plight of flood-affected communities in Pakistan, emphasizing the dire need for immediate relief and rehabilitation efforts. During a media interaction following a briefing on the Sewerage Treatment and Purification Plant project in Keamari, he underscored the necessity of direct financial support via the Benazir Income Support Programme (BISP) to aid those in distress.

Bilawal Bhutto Zardari lauded the Pakistan–Saudi defense agreement, highlighting it as a crucial and timely development, especially in light of recent tensions with India. He expressed pride in the national commitment to safeguarding sacred sites and extended congratulations to Prime Minister Shahbaz Sharif for the successful negotiation of the pact.

The PPP Chairman also addressed Karachi’s longstanding water issues, noting the collaborative efforts of the Sindh government and the Karachi Metropolitan Corporation (KMC) in implementing solutions. He mentioned the inauguration of a new canal from the Hub Dam and ongoing projects for sewage treatment and water purification, aimed at mitigating the city’s water supply challenges.

In a discussion about his recent visit to China, Bilawal clarified that it was President Asif Ali Zardari who visited, focusing on reinforcing bilateral ties and exploring new opportunities for collaboration in various sectors, including agriculture and defense. He praised the signing of multiple Memorandums of Understanding (MoUs) with China, aimed at enhancing cooperation.

Bilawal Bhutto Zardari criticized the political exploitation of natural disasters, urging unity and collective efforts in addressing the catastrophic impact of flooding across Pakistan. He highlighted the extensive damage suffered by provinces, particularly Sindh and Punjab, and reiterated the urgent need for federal intervention and international aid to address the unfolding humanitarian crisis.

In response to questions about the conduct of the Indian team in a recent cricket tournament, he advocated for keeping sports free from political interference, condemning India’s repeated politicization of the sporting arena.

The briefing concluded with Karachi Mayor Barrister Murtaza Wahab providing updates on the progress of the Sewerage Treatment and Purification Plant project, with Sindh Chief Minister Murad Ali Shah and other officials in attendance.
