Making primary care accessible: Dr. Hiba Ashraf

Karachi, August 20, 2021 (PPI-OT):“I came into this field to help every person in need, without discrimination. I did not just want to treat my patients, but also guide them based on their medical needs.” Having spent over 17 years associated with the field of primary care, Dr. Hiba Ashraf’s passion for helping others has only intensified with time. She has always been concerned with enabling the people of Pakistan to access quality healthcare, regardless of their age, gender, economic standing, or geographic location. During her time at The Indus Hospital, Korangi Campus, she has brought major reforms to the field of healthcare in Pakistan.

Her Motivation

A major pull to the field of primary care was the emphasis on its continuity. Rather than a standalone interaction, continuity of care considers healthcare to be a process that develops over time. Dr. Hiba always knew that she wanted to provide comprehensive treatment in whatever field she chose. She desired to enter the communities of her patients and bring healthcare to their doorstep. The area of primary care perfectly encapsulated those aspirations. Another factor that attracted her was that it was holistic and unbiased with whom it catered. Furthermore, it provided medical assistance to people of all ages, genders, and socio-economic classes. Dr. Hiba’s sincerest wish was to help all those around her.

Dr. Hiba has highlighted the major problems in primary healthcare provision in Pakistan. Although Pakistan has sufficient infrastructure relating to primary healthcare systems, there is a fragmentation in the provision of care. Moreover, there is a lack of referral linkages between primary, secondary, and tertiary healthcare facilities. Most budgets focus on tertiary care, nearly forgoing primary care altogether. Research has shown that developed countries with high Health Outcome Indicators have robust primary healthcare systems. This led to Dr. Hiba making it her mission to amend and transform the landscape of primary care provision in Pakistan.

Her work with the IHHN

She joined The Indus Hospital, Korangi Campus as a Junior Consultant. Her objectives of making indiscriminate healthcare accessible to all perfectly aligned with Indus Hospital and Health Network’s (IHHN) vision of “quality healthcare, free-of-cost.” Dr. Hiba’s expertise and endless compassion for her patients helped her rise quickly through the ranks at the hospital. She was soon promoted to the Director of the Residency Program before being promoted to the Head of Department of Family Medicine. She has now advanced to the Director of the Primary Care Program at Indus Hospital and Health Network. Her responsibilities include strategic planning, monitoring, evaluating, and developing the network of primary healthcare sites throughout all IHHN centers across Pakistan. Dr. Hiba furtively believes that standardization of facilities is crucial and works to ensure that the same quality that is offered in Karachi is maintained at Badin, Tharparkar, and all IHHN sites.

Dr. Hiba has used her platform at IHHN to achieve her vision of a more integrated primary care system in Pakistan. She developed a model based on the Hub and Spoke model and implemented it across the 26 Indus Hospital and Health Network sites. The hospitals acted as hubs and the independent facilities as spokes. For the successful execution of the model, Dr. Hiba established sturdier referral linkages between primary, secondary, and tertiary institutions, integrating these services more deeply. Her efforts were rewarded, as she managed to help over a million patients with her primary healthcare model over one year.

Her Accomplishments

In a society where women are largely not offered the same opportunities as men, Dr. Hiba is proud to lead a primarily female-dominated team. Under her tutelage, the team provides innovative solutions to complex problems. As a result, they generated plans for a container clinic, Pakistan’s first-ever mobile Boat Clinic, and other creative ideas to reach people across Pakistan. These helped facilitate healthcare provision to areas that had not received quality medical attention in over 70 years. From the southernmost city of Karachi to Kashmir in the high north, Dr. Hiba and her team are determined to make primary care accessible at every doorstep.

The spirit of Giving – This Independence Day by students of Foundation Public School

Karachi, August 14, 2021 (PPI-OT):This Independence Day, Indus Hospital and Health Network would like to extend a heartfelt thanks to the students of Foundation Public School, who, in an inspiring display of generosity and compassion donated gifts and goodie bags to the valiant warriors in the pediatric oncology unit.

Smiles could be seen blooming on the children’s faces throughout the Wards as they unwrapped their gifts and opened the goodie-bags, with cupcakes, juices, friendship bands, Pakistan flag and badges for them to wear.

It was a joyful experience for the children, as well as for the volunteers who got the chance to partake in the spirit of giving that marks our day of Independence, and defines us as a nation. Indus Hospital is grateful to the students of Foundation Public School who recognize their power as the youth of the country, and set an example for everyone else by taking the initiative to positively impact someone else’s life.

Indus Hospital has collaborated with the Foundation Public School before on Eid and the past Independence Day in a joint attempt to help raise the spirits of its patients, and it was with a feeling of pride and joy that we witnessed the latest batch of students from the school continue that tradition.

Protect breastfeeding – a shared responsibility: IHHN marks World Breast Feeding Week

Karachi, August 06, 2021 (PPI-OT):According to the National Nutritional Survey 2018, less than half of all mothers exclusively breastfeed in Pakistan. Therefore, protecting breastfeeding is not just the responsibility of a mother but the responsibility of the country, society, and family.

Every year, World Breastfeeding Week is celebrated from August 1 – 7 to spread awareness about the benefits and importance of breastfeeding. To mark World Breast Feeding Week, the Indus Hospital and Health Network – QF, NST and SMP Campus, Lahore held multiple sessions.

IHHN holds sessions to educate families

Dr. Adil Akhter, Associate Director of Maternal, Neonatal and Child Health, hosted one of the sessions. He highlighted that less than half of mothers exclusively breastfeed their babies for the first six months. “The first step in decreasing the number of stunted children in Pakistan is to ensure that healthcare professionals encourage and support mothers in breastfeeding,” he said.

In another session, Jahan Zuberi, Indus Hospital and Health Network’s midwifery coordinator, discussed the benefits of breastfeeding with community health workers, midwives, and lady health visitors at the hospital. She shared how to give breastfeeding education and support to mothers and families and manage breastfeeding problems.

First successful kidney transplant at Multan Institute of Kidney Diseases

Karachi, August 05, 2021 (PPI-OT):The Multan Institute of Kidney Diseases (MIKD) successfully conducted its first kidney transplant on a 40-year-old man. The patient, Waqar’s wife, donated her kidney to her husband. MIKD is one of the hospitals managed by the Indus Hospital and Health Network (IHHN).

The medical team at MIKD

The kidney transplant team comprised Dr. Salman Arshad, Dr. Ali Imran Zaidi, Dr. Tanveer Ul Haq, Dr. Asif, Dr. Masood, and Dr. Nauman. The Nephrology team assisting them comprised Dr. Rashid Asghar, Dr. Tanzeel, Dr. Shehzad Ahmad, Dr. Sobia, Dr. Aimon, Dr. Ayesha, and Dr. Shezad. Dr. Hasan, Dr. Saleem Saleemi, and Dr. Khosa made up the Anesthesia team.

About Renal Surgery

Renal transplant surgery replaces a diseased kidney with a healthy one from the donor. The surgery involves the recipient and the donor. The evaluation and preparation for the surgery take at least three months for the surgical procedure which lasts six to seven hours.

“Waqar was a regular patient of ours. He was on maintenance for 1.5 years. But, unfortunately, no one from his family was willing to donate. His wife was the only one who came forward and agreed to donate her kidney,” says Dr. Rashid Asghar, Consultant Nephrologist, MIKD.

Speaking about surgery, Dr. Asghar shared that this is the first procedure performed in a public sector hospital in Multan. “This is a highly complex surgery. We used open surgery for both nephrectomy, which is the surgical removal of a kidney, and anastomosis, which is the connection or opening between blood vessels, leaf veins, or streams.”

MIKD plans for expansion

When asked about the hospital’s plans, Dr. Asghar shared the institute’s goals. First, he intends to expand the existing transplant program and then offer training in transplant services to other institutions. “We will be starting the Peritoneal Dialysis program. In addition, we will also be offering College of Physicians and Surgeons Pakistan training programs in different specialties this year.”
