The kidney transplant team comprised Dr. Salman Arshad, Dr. Ali Imran Zaidi, Dr. Tanveer Ul Haq, Dr. Asif, Dr. Masood, and Dr. Nauman. The Nephrology team assisting them comprised Dr. Rashid Asghar, Dr. Tanzeel, Dr. Shehzad Ahmad, Dr. Sobia, Dr. Aimon, Dr. Ayesha, and Dr. Shezad. Dr. Hasan, Dr. Saleem Saleemi, and Dr. Khosa made up the Anesthesia team.

About Renal Surgery

Renal transplant surgery replaces a diseased kidney with a healthy one from the donor. The surgery involves the recipient and the donor. The evaluation and preparation for the surgery take at least three months for the surgical procedure which lasts six to seven hours.

“Waqar was a regular patient of ours. He was on maintenance for 1.5 years. But, unfortunately, no one from his family was willing to donate. His wife was the only one who came forward and agreed to donate her kidney,” says Dr. Rashid Asghar, Consultant Nephrologist, MIKD.

Speaking about surgery, Dr. Asghar shared that this is the first procedure performed in a public sector hospital in Multan. “This is a highly complex surgery. We used open surgery for both nephrectomy, which is the surgical removal of a kidney, and anastomosis, which is the connection or opening between blood vessels, leaf veins, or streams.”

MIKD plans for expansion

When asked about the hospital’s plans, Dr. Asghar shared the institute’s goals. First, he intends to expand the existing transplant program and then offer training in transplant services to other institutions. “We will be starting the Peritoneal Dialysis program. In addition, we will also be offering College of Physicians and Surgeons Pakistan training programs in different specialties this year.”
