Wellington: Pakistan’s cricket team faced a disappointing series loss against New Zealand, with captain Mohammad Rizwan reflecting on missed opportunities and strategic missteps in a 3-0 ODI series whitewash. The series concluded with a 43-run defeat in the final match, adding to a tough tour that included a 4-1 loss in the T20I series.
Rizwan highlighted the team’s failure to capitalize on early bowling opportunities in seam-friendly conditions, despite winning the toss and opting to bowl first in all three matches. “If you ask any team in the world what they would do on a wet, green pitch after winning the toss on a New Zealand morning, they’d say the same,” Rizwan remarked post-match.
He noted that New Zealand’s strategy of taking early wickets with the new ball proved effective, while Pakistan missed similar chances. Rizwan dismissed the notion of batting first as an alternative strategy, citing unfavorable conditions.
The series loss follows Pakistan’s struggles in recent tournaments, including a winless ICC Champions Trophy 2025 as hosts. Rizwan acknowledged a pattern of faltering in the late stages of matches, particularly after the 40-over mark.
In the series finale, Pakistan fell short of a 265-run target in a rain-shortened 42-over match in Mount Maunganui, despite a promising start with a half-century from Babar Azam. Kiwi pacers dominated the latter stages of the chase, leading to a collapse.
Addressing the inability of senior players to finish chases, Rizwan admitted the need for improvement in that area. “Our ability to finish games is lagging, which is why I think we’re not able to produce results,” he stated, emphasizing the importance of addressing contributing factors.
The series defeat has prompted calls for introspection and strategy refinement as Pakistan seeks to regain form in upcoming competitions.
