Islamabad, The Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) Human Rights Cell has expressed strong condemnation of the recent ban on women’s canvassing in the upcoming general elections in Mansehra, scheduled for February 8. The Cell’s General Secretary, Samana Malaika Raza, has called for immediate action from the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) against this decision, which she describes as a violation of women’s constitutional rights.
According to Pakistan Peoples Party, the ban, instituted by a group of 30 clerics, including prominent figures from Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam-Fazl (JUIF), represents a significant setback to democratic principles and gender equality. The PPP views this prohibition as a direct attack on the rights of women to participate in the political process and is urging the ECP to investigate and take legal action against those responsible.
The PPP Human Rights Cell emphasizes the need to uphold democratic values and gender equality, stressing that the ban undermines the progress made towards women’s participation in politics. The party has historically advocated for women’s rights and gender equality, both in society and politics. This commitment is highlighted by the legacy of Shaheed Benazir Bhutto, who herself faced significant opposition in her pursuit of political leadership.
The ban on women canvassing in Mansehra is seen as a regressive move that harks back to the challenges encountered by Benazir Bhutto. The PPP is urging the ECP to intervene and revoke this discriminatory ban, ensuring that all candidates, regardless of gender, have equal opportunities to participate in the elections.
In a broader appeal, the PPP is calling on the people of Mansehra to reject this ban and support candidates who advocate for democracy, inclusivity, and gender equality. This stand against the ban is part of the party’s ongoing commitment to fight for women’s rights and establish a society where women can freely exercise their political rights without fear or discrimination.
