Karachi, Altaf Shakoor, the Chairman of the Pasban Democratic Party (PDP), has expressed approval of the Supreme Court of Pakistan’s Registrar addressing the British High Commissioner’s recent public remarks on Pakistan’s legal system. The Registrar’s letter came in response to comments made by the British High Commissioner, Jane Marriott, regarding the need for democracy and open societies in Pakistan.
According to Pasban Democratic Party, the Registrar, Jazeela Aslam, acted on directives from Chief Justice of Pakistan Qazi Faez Isa to craft a response to Marriott’s speech at the Asma Jehangir Conference held on April 27. The letter criticized the British government’s commentary on the Supreme Court’s decisions, emphasizing that such criticism was unjustified given the court’s commitment to upholding the Elections Act of 2017, which mandates democracy within political parties through intra-party elections.
The Registrar’s communication also highlighted historical grievances involving the British government, such as the 1953 overthrow of Mohammad Mossadegh’s government in Iran and the implementation of the Balfour Declaration, which led to the establishment of Israel. These references were used to underscore the complexities of historical accountability and the impact of past decisions on current international relations.
Altaf Shakoor lauded the Supreme Court’s stance and the Registrar’s letter for invoking these historical events, suggesting that acknowledgment of these actions could foster trust and peace. He also criticized the tendency of foreign governments to overlook their historical actions while scrutinizing Pakistan’s legal and political decisions.
