Karachi, Dr. Fowzia Siddiqui, Chairperson of the Global Aafia Movement, is expected to have a crucial meeting next week with her sister, Dr. Aafia Siddiqui, who is currently incarcerated at FMC Carswell prison in the United States. This anticipated meeting follows Dr. Fowzia’s recent travel to the U.S. accompanied by Aafia’s lawyer, Clive Stafford Smith.
According to Aafia Movement, before the planned prison visit, Dr. Fowzia and Stafford Smith have been engaging with key figures and attending events across various American cities. Their efforts included a visit to the Pakistani Ambassador to the U.S., Masood Khan, which culminated in a statement from Khan on social media platform X. In his post, Khan expressed hope that the U.S. government could facilitate Aafia’s release, drawing parallels with Washington’s negotiations with the Taliban.
The statement by Ambassador Khan has been welcomed by Muhammad Ayub, the Global Coordinator of the Aafia Movement, who expressed optimism that the Pakistani embassy would intensify its efforts in line with court directives to secure Aafia Siddiqui’s release. Ayub also highlighted the emotional aspect of the upcoming visit, emphasizing the hope that Dr. Fowzia would be able to meet her sister without a physical barrier between them.
Supporters of the Aafia Movement have echoed Ayub’s sentiments, appreciating the ambassador’s recognition of his duties and expressing a strong desire for successful diplomatic efforts to bring about Aafia Siddiqui’s release, citing her long ordeal and the impact on her family.
