Islamabad, Students from the National University of Medical Sciences (NUMS) demonstrated exceptional participation and success in the National Workshop organized by the Pakistan Council of Research in Water Resources (PCRWR) as part of Pakistan Water Week 2023. The event, themed “Transformative Approaches for the Future,” was held on December 7-8, 2023, at the Pak-China Friendship Center in Islamabad, focusing on raising awareness and facilitating knowledge exchange among youth about sustainable water practices.
According to National University of Medical Sciences, the workshop was a significant opportunity for students to articulate their vision for a water-secure future. Among the various activities at the event, the Poster Competition was a major highlight. It saw participation from 50 students from universities and colleges nationwide, emphasizing the theme “Causes, Impacts, and Preemptive Strategies to Prevent Flash Flooding.” This theme resonates with several Sustainable Development Goals, including SDG 6 (Clean Water and Sanitation), SDG 13 (Climate Action), SDG 11 (Sustainable Cities and Communities), and SDG 15 (Life on Land).
NUMS students Ms. Nida Rafaqat, Ms. Myra Shahbaz from batch 2020, and Ms. Sara Maqsood from batch 2022, all members of the NUMS Arts and Media Society at the MUMS AFPGMI Campus, notably won the first position in the Poster Competition. Their achievement was rewarded with a cash prize of Rs 50,000/-.
A significant moment for the NUMS students was the opportunity to present their work to Mr. Ahmed Irfan Aslam, Pakistan’s Federal Minister of Water Resources, who was present at the event. The workshop included various competitions, debates, and water board games, with participation from universities across Pakistan. The success of the event was greatly attributed to the support from organizations such as PCRWR, IWMI, UNICEF, Islamic Relief Fund, Water Aid, and the German Corporation.
The participation in Pakistan Water Week was a valuable experience for the NUMS students, enhancing their knowledge and fostering collaboration in the field of sustainable water management.
