NA-233 Election Reveals MNA Secured Only 20% of Registered Voter Support

Karachi: In a revealing outcome from the 2024 General Elections, the Member of the National Assembly (MNA) elected from the NA-233 Karachi Korangi-II constituency garnered just 20% of support from registered voters, despite winning the seat with 42% of the votes cast. This result highlights the nuances and implications of Pakistan's First-Past-The-Post (FPTP) electoral system, where victory is determined by the highest vote share, not necessarily a majority.

According to Free and Fair Election Network, the final consolidated results indicate a voter turnout of 47% in the constituency. The elected MNA secured 103,967 votes out of the 249,226 ballots cast on February 8, 2024, leaving 57% of votes, or 142,424, for other candidates. The runner-up received 24% of the votes, while the third-place candidate collected 12%. Collectively, the remaining candidates obtained 22% of the votes, and 1% of the ballots were declared invalid.

This analysis forms part of a broader evaluation by FAFEN on electoral representativeness across Pakistan's 266 National Assembly constituencies. The FPTP system, as demonstrated, often results in elected officials who lack majority voter support. In contrast, a proportional representation system would allocate legislative seats more evenly based on vote shares, reflecting a wider spectrum of voter preferences. The 2024 election data underscores the disparity between votes cast and representation achieved, highlighting a systemic issue across Pakistan's electoral landscape.
