Karachi: On Sunday, September 22, the Pasban Democratic Party will lead a protest outside the Karachi Press Club to call for the release of Dr. Aafia Siddiqui, highlighting what they describe as the unjust 86-year sentence imposed by an American court. The demonstration in Karachi is part of a series of nationwide protests demanding an end to what supporters call the brutal and unfair treatment of Siddiqui in the U.S.
According to Pasban Democratic Party, Altaf Shakoor, speaking in Islamabad, expressed steadfast support for the Aafia Movement and Dr. Fawzia Siddiqui in their long-standing efforts to secure Siddiqui’s release. He criticized the Pakistani government’s apparent apathy and inconsistent stance towards Siddiqui, whom they have also referred to as the “daughter of the nation.” He stated that despite the government’s verbal acknowledgment of Siddiqui as a national figure, there has been a lack of concrete action to assist her.
The Pasban Democratic Party has pledged to continue its advocacy until Siddiqui is returned to Pakistan, emphasizing that the protests on September 23 will mark a renewed effort to address the grievances surrounding her incarceration and alleged mistreatment. Siddiqui was convicted on September 23, 2010, in what her supporters claim was a prejudiced trial by the U.S. judiciary.
