SARGODHA: In the recent General Elections 2024, the Member of the National Assembly (MNA) from NA-82 Sargodha-I was elected with a mere 19 percent of voter support, despite securing 108,954 votes, which comprised 37 percent of the total 293,739 ballots cast in the constituency.
According to Free and Fair Election Network, the voter turnout in the constituency was 52 percent, with the winner receiving votes from only a minority of those who participated. A significant 60 percent, or 175,880 voters, chose other candidates, reflecting their preference for alternative representation. The runner-up garnered 30 percent of the votes, while the third-place candidate received 21 percent. The remaining candidates collectively obtained nine percent of the votes. Additionally, 8,905 ballots, accounting for three percent of the total, were declared invalid, not benefiting any candidate.
This report is part of Free and Fair Election Network's analysis focusing on the unrepresentativeness of electoral outcomes in Pakistan, emphasizing the impact of the First-Past-The-Post (FPTP) system. The analysis suggests that in multi-candidate contests, a substantial portion of voters may feel unrepresented, which raises concerns about legitimacy and potential political instability.
