Islamabad: Allama Raja Nasir Abbas of Majlis-e-Wahdatul Muslimeen has been appointed as the Leader of the Opposition in the Senate, as announced on Tuesday. This appointment comes after the position remained vacant since August 2025, following the disqualification of Senator Shibli Faraz and other PTI leaders due to convictions linked to the May 2023 violence.
According to Free and Fair Election Network, the office of the Leader of the Opposition, while often seen as ceremonial, includes specific benefits and privileges. The Leader of the Opposition receives a salary and allowances equivalent to that of federal ministers, as per the Members of Parliament (Salaries and Allowances) Act, 1974. These entitlements include a monthly salary, a sumptuary allowance, an official vehicle, and an official residence, among others.
Parliamentary conventions afford the Leader of the Opposition a front-row seat opposite the Leader of the House. Although not explicitly codified, these conventions allow the Leader of the Opposition precedence in requesting the floor during sessions. The role, therefore, carries not only financial benefits but also a degree of influence within parliamentary proceedings.
