Ziarat: In the General Election of 2024, the elected Member of the National Assembly (MNA) from the constituency of NA-253, which includes the areas of Ziarat, Harnai, Sibi, Kohlu, and Dera Bugti, secured victory with 54,506 votes. This figure represents 23% of the 241,847 ballots cast and only 12% of the 453,352 registered voters in the constituency. Under Pakistan's First-Past-The-Post (FPTP) electoral system, candidates are required only to achieve the highest vote share to win, rather than securing a majority.
According to the Free and Fair Election Network, the Final Consolidated Result (Form-49) indicated that the voter turnout for this election was 53%. Despite the victory, the elected representative did not have the support of the majority of voters, as 179,565 individuals, or 74%, voted for other candidates on February 8, 2024. The runner-up in the election received 19% of the votes, and the third-placed candidate garnered 13%, while the remaining candidates collectively accounted for 42% of the votes. Additionally, 7,776 ballots, representing 3% of the votes, were declared invalid.
The analysis of the election results by FAFEN underscores the limitations of the FPTP system, where representatives are elected without a majority of votes. This analysis is part of FAFEN's broader examination of electoral representativeness in Pakistan's 266 National Assembly constituencies. The data highlights the disparity between the votes cast and the representation obtained, contrasting with a proportional representation (PR) system where legislative seats are distributed according to vote shares, potentially reflecting a wider array of voter preferences.
