Taunsa: In the recent General Elections of 2024, the elected Member of the National Assembly from NA-183 Taunsa garnered 134,501 votes, representing 49% of the 273,492 ballots cast. This figure accounts for only 28% of the 476,495 registered voters in the constituency. The electoral victory was achieved under Pakistan's First-Past-The-Post system, which awards the seat to the candidate with the highest vote share rather than a majority.
According to Free and Fair Election Network (FAFEN), the Final Consolidated Result (Form-49) of the constituency reported a voter turnout of 57%. Despite securing the seat, the winner did not have the majority support of those who voted on February 8, 2024, as 128,051 voters, or 47%, cast their votes for other candidates.
The runner-up candidate in the constituency received 32% of the votes, while the third-placed candidate secured 5%. The remaining candidates collectively received 9% of the votes cast. Additionally, 10,940 ballots, constituting 4% of the total, were declared invalid.
FAFEN's analysis highlights the representational gap produced by the First-Past-The-Post system in Pakistan's 266 National Assembly constituencies. Unlike a proportional representation system, which allocates legislative seats in proportion to vote shares, the current system allows for the election of members who may not reflect the majority preference of the electorate. The data from Pakistan's GE-2024 underscores the disparity between votes cast and representation secured.
